17. Fusion Fission (1979 version)

11. Like a Miracle (Alternate Version)
12. A New Kind of Man (Alternate Version)
13. He's a Liquid (Alternate Version)

A lot of those extra tracks you list simply aren't worth releasing as they are fragments or experiments. It is entirely likely that some of the others may not exist in a releasable form (or indeed any form at all except for a badly-recorded bootleg.)

In addition to that, several of these tracks you mention are from entirely different projects altogether (Quiet Man 3 and 4, Musique d'Ameublement, The Bed etc) and would be entirely inappropriate as they have nothing to do with Metamatic.
The latter JIngles etc are available in several versions of 'From Brussels With Love'

For what it's worth, I think the track listing issued is spot on for the defintive issue of Metamatic.

Having said that, I would hope that the Quiet Man 3 and 4 are at least considered for a similar re-issue of The Garden one day. Incidentally, they are not 'alternative versions' but separate tracks in their own right.

The final track-listing for the version of Metamatic that's due for release next month can be found in the News News section.

This is (in all but name) the definitive version - there are NO plans to follow it with a complete version at some point in the future.

Yeah, I reckon so as well... wink

I'm confident that everyone will like what's been done with the album. And it's never sounded better. laugh

Regarding the other tracks which have been identified by GlamourZero as possible additions.

Miles Away, A Long Time and Swimmer II are not appropriate to the Metamatic album. Instead, they've already been ear-marked to appear on a new version of The Garden which - all things being equal - could come out in the new year. Also, it'll probably be the extended version of Swimmer II, as it appeared on the Twelve Inch Single of Dancing Like a Gun , that'll be released as the version from the Seven Inch Single was edited.

Piano Piece, Echo Piece, Jamie's Theme, He's a Liquid (Alternate Dub Version), He's a Liquid (Alternate Instrumental Version), Touch & Go (Strings Version), Touch & Go (Dub Version), Bed Flight, Red Collar, Drums 1 and Drums 2 are from an abandoned project entitled The Bed. These tracks made their way into the public domain on a bootleg that did the rounds back in the early eighties entitled Metamatic Demos. Anyone who's managed to track down a copy of that tape will know that the sound quality has never been that good - and some of the tracks are little more than extended experiments - especially Drums 1 and Drums 2. In saying that, some of them are of interest and could be formally released providing (of course) that we're able to locate versions of a sufficiently high enough quality.

TBC : This stands for To Be Confirmed and (oddly enough) isn't a track title! wink

Musique D'Ameublement and A Jingle (1+2+3 Versions) are different titles for the same thing. Two of these Jingles appeared on the recently released From Brussels With Love CD. I believe that there are five different Jingles in all spread out over the whole series. There are no plans (that I'm aware of) for the ones that didn't make the recently released From Brussels With Love CD to be formally re-released.

Quiet Man (Alternative Version 3) and Quiet Man (Alternative Version 4) : These are NOT alternative versions of the track Quiet Men, instead they are instrumentals (out of broadly the same mould as Glimmer) and (due to their original release date) are currently ear-marked to appear on a new version of The Garden mentioned above. They originally appeared on the Touch Meridians tapes and are correctly titled The Quiet Man 4 and The Quiet Man 3 .

Fusion Fission (1979 Version) : This appeared on a bootleg a while ago and is an early version of the track that would eventually appear on The Garden . There's no sign of this particular version in John's archive, and the sound quality of this bootleg recording is nowhere near good enough for it to be formally released. In the meantime, we'll keep searching for a better quality version.

A New Kind Of Man (Alternative Version 1) and A New Kind Of Man (Alternative Version 2) : These two tracks appeared on the Metamatic Demos tape mentioned above. One of them is the standard album version, while the other is the version which originally appeared on VS 303 - both of these have been included on the forthcoming Metamatic CD.

Like a Miracle (1979 Version) : The existence of this track reached almost mythical proportions when it was first mentioned in Record Collector back in the early eighties - well BEFORE the release of The Golden Section. It was finally confirmed as being something that could eventually see the light of day when it was referenced in an article in Extreme Voice magazine. This track is on the forthcoming version of Metamatic where it has been listed as Like a Miracle (Alternative Version).

No-One Driving (demo) : There is an early version of No-One Driving whose quality is such that it could be formally released at some point. However, it was removed from the running order from the second disc of the forthcoming edition of Metamatic as it was felt that that disc already featured enough versions of tracks (He's a Liquid and A New Kind of Man) that would also appear on the basic album.

The other tracks listed (Film One, This City, Glimmer, Mr No, 20th Century, Young Love, My Face, Cinemascope and To Be With You) have all been included. laugh

Phew - I hope that that's covered everything... laugh

For a man with so much to do, that's a pretty definitive answer I'd say!

Enough said. Draw a line

Cheers Rob. cool

Hi Rob
Thank you for taking the time to "give us the facts" I certainly enjoyed reading it. Now the reasons why some things have been left off the new version of Metamatic are a lot clearer.

For me it's good news that Quiet Men 3 & 4 will be "ear-marked" to appear on the "new" Garden album. I certainly hope it does as IMHO they are worth including.

I'm lucky that I have a bootleg copy of The Bed. OK the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired but again IMHO for every John Foxx fan this is a must have, although being experimental is still worthly of inclusion on any CD. I have my fingers crossed that someone will be able to locate a decent enough copy. I wonder what Johns opinion of The Bed is and did he ever intend for it to leak out? I'm for one glad it did.

One bootleg track I haven't heard is the 1979 version of Fusion/fission.
If someone has this I'd be eternally grateful, if it could be made available as an MP3 and sent via E-mail.

Again Rob thanks for all your efforts and it's nice to have definitive answers.
