Given the way that John Foxx career has progressed since this moment, would it be inappropriate to describe Metamatic as the 'dawn chorus'...

Well posted Birdsong, and particularly for those of us that were old enough to have bought it in its time

Can't say I recall where I purchased my copy from (still have it, still in fairly good nick). I probably got it from HMV in Glasgow town centre, but I get this nagging feeling that it may have been from a small independent shop that briefly flourished for a time nearer to my home.

What I will always remember very clearly is being a teenager and hearing it on an evening radio show on its release, it just seemed to come from out of nowhere, I'd never heard anything just so... perfect.
By that time I'd already heard the rhythmic sophistication of Kraftwerk and the pulsing clash of Numan, but Underpass really was like the sound of a dystopian future being beamed through space to us in all its gritty, crashing, twisting, and euphoric glory.

(and its quite an iconic sleeve cover, well, for us fans at any rate)

Wow. Where as that 30 years gone?????

I still remember buying my copy from Our Price record shop in Hemel Hempstead. Can't remember the cost though. At least I still have my copy albeit well played and the cover looking decidedly tatty.

Thank you Martin for posting about this very important anniversary. Happy Birthday to Underpass, the single that totally changed my life and musical direction. Like Mike said I doubt I'd be posting today if it wasn't for Underpass.

I certainly can't say it any better than the previous posters. I clearly remember buying it as well. Underpass was the single most influential song on me during a time (college/university days) when music plays such a significant role in our lives. But I have to give a nod to Film 1 as well. I remember first hearing it, smiling, shaking my head and and thinking "Now there is something I have never heard before!" Cheers to 30! Lets get back together in another 30 to recall what John is doing now...

Amen to that! John is simply not allowed to retire. Ever.

I don't recall ever seeing a copy of that single; the first thing I heard was "No One Driving" b/w "Glimmer." I didn't hear "Film One" until one of the CD reissues a few years ago.

Anyway... thirty years! He's built up quite a body of work to show for all that time, now, and so much of it has been both recent and good. Still way too early to think about stopping.

I can see it now. 30 years time. John's still performing. I take my grandkids to his concert. The younger one says "Who's the old codger with the zimmer frame?".

Which means Metamatic, the album, is also coming up to its 30th anniversary.

Oh goody! That means a Metamatic Reduxotronic remaster with early versions + an interview DVD.

Discography on this site says "18 January 1980", so yes, not far away.

Plus I think we've had the interview disc, the expanded remastered, doubled up, the live in-its-entirety performance, ....what else is there?
