Again? Drive is a recent song.

Anyway, the version of Shadow Man was great too. A major improvement over the original on the Shifting City CD.

I recorded about 10 of the set on my other camera but it turned out that the high volume overwhelmed the camera's mike. Camera is the only one that sounds decent. The others all have a bad thumping sound. I'll put all these up soon but if anyone has some good editing software that can help fix the sound, I'd be happy to hear from you.

Despite what seem to be quite low attendances, the Australian tour has put John in touch at last with his fans over there and been extremely well received.
One thing I noticed about the crowd in Sydney and was mildly concerned about was the average age of the audience.

I would place it at the mid-40s. I certainly didn't see anyone below 25 except for a 13 to 15 y.o. boy in a reserved seat at the front.

This basically meant to me that these were old fans. Everyone seemed to know all the songs. So nobody young seems to be aware of John. At least in Sydney.

Later, after the concert, I heard a few English accents and overheard someone saying that they last saw him perform in Manchester.

So some in the audience were original English fans who most likely migrated here subsequently.

You should have said something! I would have offered to put you up at my place.[/b]
Thanks very much for the offer, but as soon as I saw Rob's announcement about the gigs back in February, I bought my Metro Theatre ticket, found a hotel room for the night (even though the 'night' only ended up being about three hours eek ) and booked the air travel.

Sorry I didn't get to work out who the forum members were at the gig, maybe I should have got a special 'Metamatic Forum' shirt printed just for the night? wink I saw one bloke wearing a 'John Foxx Metamatic' shirt (not sure if it was an official print or not). I don't suppose that was you by any chance?

Cheers ...

He might have been confused.

I saw him on Sounds Unlimited being interviewed by Donnie Sutherland. John said he was out reconnoitering. This was in late '83.

I know this because I took a photo of the TV screen. The processing date on the slide says DEC 1983. I usually got my stuff processed quickly so he was either here in November or December of that year.

I asked him about this while he was autographing my poster. He said he and the band were in Japan when someone suggested he go to Australia to do some promo work.

He told me he went to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and did some radio and TV interviews.

He did remark after TCM how much Sydney had changed. Regardless, it was great to finally see him live.

No. But he was the first guy at the door.

I couldn't believe this! We got to the Metro at 6 and someone else beat us there. I have him in a picture. He also had a black baseball cap, if we're both thinking of the same guy.

Anyway, after that we went off to eat, got ripped of at the 3 Monkeys bar across the road ($12+ for 2 pints of Pure Blonde!), came back, saw nobody else was there except for him then went down into the bar below the Metro.

We emerged at 7:20 to find nearly 50 people there waiting. The show didn't start until 8:30 so we were all still way too early. Wasted an hour of valuable drinking time (the bar below the Metro had extremely cheap drinks!).

Looks as thou everyone has really enjoyed John's show's.
I luved the almost hidden anger behind his vocals that really showed he is indeed into his craft.

I actually asked John why he came out to tour Australia when quite frankly his support bass is very small and radio never plays his stuff.

He was very polite and and said because he was asked and he wanted to see a bit of Australia and play some live gig's. He said when he was down in 1983, it was just a side trip from when he was touring Japan and he did not see anything or play live, so he was happy to be downunder.

Me I really was glad he came out and I sure from the Sydney concert he realised that while small - us Aussie fans are passionate.

I have waited with baited breath ever since the Garden was released to see John play live and frankly never thought I would. he was brilliant and seems to be a very nice guy as well.

My signed copy of " A new kind of Man" live CD will be treasured forever.

I see.

I've actually been listening to the Crash and Burn and From Trash albums quite a lot lately. I would have loved to have heard more tracks from them.

I'm surprised, though, that he didn't play anything from Sideways.

I can't see how anybody could complain (apart from wanting to hear more!).

Anger? I didn't notice that. It has mellowed since the Ultravox days but it still sounds great.

I tried Googling for the promoter, 2HB Promotions, but I didn't find anything relevant.
Red Octopus obviously did the posters and T-shirts.

I'm curious to know who his big fan was and whether they'll try and get him to come out again.

He struck me as a little introverted or, at least, reserved. A nice, pleasant, harmless sort of bloke. Louis was a lot more extroverted on stage judging by all his jumping and jiving and rocking and reeling. I wonder what John was thinking with all those glances he was making.

I can't say I blame Louis. He wasn't getting much attention. Everyone who stood up at the front had their eyes firmly fixed on John.

One other odd thing I noticed with the audience, apart from the average age, was the small proportion of women to men.

I think there was only about a dozen or so females. Two readheads, which was odd in itself.

I'm curious if its like this in the UK too.
