Most of us can probably recall a certain track that we liked so much and bought it.

Then on tracking its progress you realise that it reached number 2.

How frustrating huh?

The one for me was Ultravox!
Vienna of course....1980.

And we know who was number 1 hmmmmm?

*ARGH* >:-O

don't mention THAT # 1 "song" in any u-vox related forum , m8 ! ;-o

jus' kidding , of course ... but i would really like to see nobody else than midge ure himself play THAT specific # 1 "song" in an acoustic version live - only to suddenly abort it & say something like "well ... i still think that 'vienna' is a much better song than that one !" & continue playing "vienna" instead , of course ! *hehehe*

And another classic...

Sparks "This town ain't big enough" #2 1974.

I think it was the rubettes who beat them to top spot?

Avalon by Roxy Music should have been number one. Made it into the top 20 but just about. A magical song!

I read somewhere that Depeche Mode are the most successful singles band in the UK NEVER to have had a number one hit?

"Where the mountains meet the sea..."

Thunder in the Mountains , listened to it the other day. What a performance. It should have thundered it's way to Number 1. I think it stalled at 3.

Toyah another successful singles act of the early eighties.

Bowies' Heroes another classic that should have made it to the top.

Queen's Radio Ga Ga their most Ultravoxy track stalled at 2.

Japan's popularity in the early eighties was remarkable, their sweet cover of Smokey's classic I Second that Emotion should have got them their No. 1.

The Strangler's Golden Brown , another classic that nearly made it to the top.

OMD's Joan Of Arc backed with a brilliant b-side The Romance of the Telescope deserved the No. 1 spot.

Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene 4 and Kraftwerk's Autobahn, both deserved better.

Visage's Fade To Grey and Gary Numan's We Are Glass , both desreved the Number 1 spot.

Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of The Beatles track Dear Prudence was impressive. With Robert Smith as a Banshee anything could have been possible!

Ultravox's Hymn was another great track that should have been Ultravox's 2nd No. 1 , after Vienna of course. However, someone mentioned what would have happened if Hiroshima Mon Amour would have been released as a single. A top 5 hit surely with No. 1 spot beckoning.

A short list!

I've given this one a lot of thought, also considering that it's long time since I worried about a song I like becoming number one!..
however my vote goes to:

Gary Numan - We Are Glass
Human League - Love Action
Ultravox - Vienna
Japan - Ghosts
OMD - Maid of Orleans

I'm sure there are a few more, even going back to the 70s but these are the ones that really 'spring' to mind..

On the subject of Depeche Mode, yes it's pity they never got a number one .. I would vote for Just Can't Get Enough or Enjoy the Silence.

This site was good a few weeks ago for chart stuff but it seems to have been made 'unavailable' : http://www.polyhex.com/music/chartruns/chartruns.php

Just the one contender from me...

O Superman by Laurie Anderson

I was blown away when I first it - and it's impact hasn't been dulled over the years. A truly staggering record.
