And a new mini-album called "Evidence" due in the same month!

http://blog.johnfoxxandthemaths.com/?p=1326

Good news, just a shame that all John's gigs seem to be in London these days. You can understand why but I wish he'd venture North again, especially after the Holmfirth gig got cancelled last Autumn!

The Evidence mini-album has been mentioned a few times already - I'm sure that it was even included in among one of the last Metamatic Updates. I'm currently waiting for the track-listing to be finalised.

There's no reason why John can't play more gigs up in the North of England (or even further afield), but it's down to the venues to make him an appropriate offer.

Little side note - spotted Cargo briefly on the most recent episode of the Apprentice, always enjoyed John's concerts at this venue.

Good news that Evidence is on its way, looking forward to September.

Thanks - Rob. grin

It has just been announced that the very wonderful Tara Busch will be supporting John Foxx And the Maths at the Cargo show.

Tara says: I'll be performing playing my new electro-sci fi symphony, I Speak Machine.

Arrghhh - this is going to be interesting. Flying back to UK Summer holiday in late July and early August, but also need to be back for a wedding on the 7th of Sept. Now can I swing it to arrive earlier and get to the gig too?

Thanks to the sterling efforts of Pheidippides all those years ago, the airfares to the UK this year are pretty high (and availability pretty low!).

OK, logistically it all very easy, but now have to negotiate with the "affected parties" to make it all work. Fingers crossed. I'm not a violent man usually, but killing two birds with one stone would be nice!

It's just been confirmed that Benge's colleagues from Wrangler will be DJing at Cargo.

That's Phil Winter and Stephen Mallinder (ex. Cabaret Voltaire)

No problem - the timings are as follows...

Doors are at 19:00pm (CHANGED FROM 19:30pm), and John Foxx And The Maths are due to be on-stage at 21:00pm for a 22:30pm finish.

Also at Cargo - Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) will be DJ-ing and Tara Busch will be performing her new electronic work I Speak Machine.

Thanks Rob. Great set-list; only slight surprise is The Shape Of Things only contributed one track.

Looking forward to some eye-witness accounts of the night smile

Well, what a night!

Didn't know what to expect with Tara and was delighted with the most refreshing and talented performance I have seen in a long time. Great theme, and I felt the material was very powerful. CD will be bought although I do suspect it may have more power live than recorded - will let you know. Loved her to bits basically.

Johns set! Well, sad to not have Ms Steer on stage, but the set was fantastic - I couldn't have asked for more. The old classics still had their regular power and the new material has a lot of emotion - the new album should be a cracker so I can't wait for that. Walk was the highlight for me, the violin and drum rhythm combine to give a solid melody/harmony. Flowing violin with regimented drums - neat.

Push me hard and I rather have had Young Savage over Dislocation, but maybe considering the band membership of the night, the setlist was more appropriate. Hannah looked slightly surprised at the end with the volume of cheering and deserved applause, Benge afterwards seemed excited about the release of the album. Great night out, definitely worth the trip over.

Had a great time in the pub before, thanks to Brian, Garry, Peter, Tapio and his other half, Andreas and his other half, and other besides. Thanks for meeting up - we really should do so more often!! smile

Guess that Bestival is being rocked as I write.

So, Cargo then. Live-wise, it really is his spiritual home, or at least it should be. In years to come maybe we should get a blue plaque placed on the wall or something. It was loud. LOUD. Trouser-flapping, freq-ripping loud. Good loud though not bad, ear-shrieking loud. But it didn’t start that way. Shatterproof and He’s A Liquid suffered from a sound issue that subdued both songs, everything not kicking in until Evergreen. All I can remember of No-one Driving is BASS. I was watching from the DJ Booth, if you’ve not been to Cargo – it’s basically a few old railway arches, and the DJ Booth is a small arch within the arch. Consequently, this is where all the bass seemed to collect as sound. I was wearing jeans and they flapped. They flapped like flags in a force 10. Brilliant.

The first new one up was Evidence - a beautiful little track, coupled with a very arresting visual of cut-up flowers or orchids splicing and shifting, strangely giving it a very Burroughsian feel that I doubt is in the song itself. Running Man never, ever fails to deliver and I will never tire of the 60s Spy-Fi graphics by Barnbrook that accompany it. My Town was so brief and fleeting – a fragment of memory says it was a very delicate, wistful song over some tight, Kraftwerk-like beat – but I could be very, very wrong.

Burning Car with Hannah Peel on violin – that will never, ever get old. It’s such a joy to hear a song you love so much given new life that you didn’t think it needed but was glad when it happened anyhow. Peel also joins in for vocals during a storming Catwalk – if I had one change I’d like to see, it’d be more vocals from Peel as they work so well with Foxx’s. Mention must go to Benge whose drumming was incredibly tight tonight (Serafina Steer wasn’t able to perform at Cargo).

In between the smoke and noise, we had a superb DJ set from Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder – mixing up Throbbing Gristle and Minimal Wave stuff with his own electronics, and a stunning set from Tara Busch.

I freely admit, I really didn’t ‘get’ Busch at XOYO at all, but here at Cargo her ideas and her music were given the space to breathe and move. Busch performed her new album project I Speak Machine in its entirety live. Foxx once said of Gareth Jones; ‘he’s like a human blur’ – much the same could be said of Busch. Busch was nestled in behind bunkers of Moog, pedals and light, swiftly moving, singing, playing, mixing seemingly all at once, creating a wonderful live experience. I got it this time and I hope she plays on these shores again soon.

@Garry - ah, the flapping! Yep, that was pretty amazing. I was standing in front of the bass bins and the force nearly had my trousers off! That is an unpleasant prospect, so tightened belt! It could have rivalled the Fields of the Nephilim gig I saw in Bristol as the loudest too - at that gig I "SAW" sound as the bass beats moved the backlit dry ice filled air. An amazing sight. that was an unpleasant loud in many ways (enjoyed the gig immensely though), and as you mention, the Cargo loud was compeltely enjoyable!

Yes, it was a really great meeting. I agree with you and it was nice to meet you and all the others (esp. Luca and Elena - I haven't seen since 9 years).

Came home on Friday evening with both Vinyl's in my hands. I played both one time now and had so much pleasure to use Vinyl's again. A real great work and a wonderful collectors item!
The concert we enjoyed very much. My personal highlights were Evidence and Talk. Love both tracks a lot and live they were great. The whole concert was great and LOUD. Sad we could not bought the new CD. But I order it as soon as possible.
A little extra highlight for me was I bumped into Robin Simon. I never thought I get this chance one day.
So, it was a perfect evening for me.

Let's hope we can do it next year again... smile

Wanted to do his for a long time but only got around to it yesterday/today.

Having heard "Walk" live and in the teaser released just before Cargo, I thought it was going to be one of the core tracks on "Evidence". But it was so smooth, I felt it lost a lot of its impact, so I went back to the live recordings again, and found I prefer that version a lot more. Now, I am sure that if I heard the CD version first that I may well have preferred that - human tastes are a funny thing to comprehend.

So, I produced a live version using footage from Brian (he kindly gave the OK to use his clip) and combined the sound from the two to give a quasi-stereo effect. As you may recall, it was rather loud that night, and as I was just using an iPhone you will have to forgive the quality - the volume was just a bit too much to handle at times.

Here it is for you to enjoy/criticise!

Some disclaimers first though:
1) I'm still learning how to use Premiere Elements, so the switches between angles is not always perfectly timed,
2) Brian's footage is much steadier than mine!
3) Brian's footage is much more, er, photogenic than mine because of his location and er.... proximity wink.
4) Sincere apologies to Benge as I should have covered his input much more.
5) Sorry about the annoying guy who keeps repeating something he thinks is witty and is desperate for a reaction (at the beginning - what is he saying anyway?).

Link>>>> John Foxx And The Maths - Walk - Cargo 09/2012 <<<<Link

Putting the clips technical quality to one side for a second, I'm kind of interested on peoples opinions of this version of the song compared to the CD version.

Hope you enjoy!

I like what you have done Chris. cool

I always had a soft spot for the rawness of this version as well.
