On Wednesday the 18th of June, John Foxx will be performing Cathedral Oceans III in the Fellow’s Garden at Durham Castle as part of the Durham Arts Festival.
The press release for this event reads as follows...
From the 14th to the 21st of June, the city of Durham will host the inaugural Durham Arts Festival. An all inclusive program of visual art, film, workshops, lectures, theatre and musical events will provide opportunities for everyone to engage with the arts.
The Durham Arts Festival is a unique project both in its motivations and its management. The project has been brought together by a team of dedicated student volunteers from Durham University, who have managed all aspects of the event from programming and fundraising to marketing and co-ordination.
Exhibitors include: Lee Miller, Quentin Blake, Judith Kerr, Dariush Mehrjui, Martin Firrell and a very special presentation of John Foxx’s Cathedral Oceans III in the Fellow’s Garden of Durham Castle.
Created by pioneering electronic composer John Foxx, Cathedral Oceans III is a multimedia installation that comprises of a series of digitally composed stained glass windows projected directly onto the walls of Durham Castle. The piece comments on the deterioration of sacred spaces and looks to a future reconciled with nature. John will accompany the images with a live soundtrack, evoking the choral traditions of religious society to complete this rich presentation. Framed within the walls of Durham Castle, a Norman castle facing Durham Cathedral and overlooking the River Wear, this stunning use of high tech audio visual equipment in a World Heritage Site will create a sumptuous sensory experience that is bound to be one of the biggest audiovisual events in the North East this summer.

Wow, that all sounds very exciting! What a setting for the gig.
There's a chance I'll be away then - typically. We'll see...

Damn - what a shame. We can't go because we've booked to go to Genoa... It's all about timing isn't it. Durham will be a magnificent gig as the cathedral is one of the most stunning buildings in the country. I'm genuinely envious of anyone who gets the opportunity to go.

However much I'd love to go to this event and it's something I've looked forward to for a long time, due to a commitment I have on the 19th, unless some kind person is driving back in the London direction same night I won't be able to attend this concert. Peter

Wonderful news! I'll probably be going to this.
Where do we buy tickets from? Can't find anything on the website at all.

I hope you enjoy the show and look forward to reading about it. Regrettably it has proved beyond my means and time to get to this presentation.

Given the eloquent description, it sounds like it deserves a professional recording of the event. I don't know the TV scene in the UK. Does the BBC (or whoever) do arts/music programs? Perhaps they can be prodded into recording it for broadcast. Next best alternative would be to bring out a video on DVD.

As soon as Rob mentioned doing a review I immediately thought of you. It's a shame you can't be there. I would happily hand the baton back to you. Still, the only pressure is the pressure I put on myself, & I've never ducked a challenge, so all I need to find is my quill, parchment paper, ink & blotter, then I'll be on my way after I've put WD40 on my Pennyfarthing.

I make notes at the gigs I go to in a series of notebooks for which I now have a modest reputation. I use those red-and-white 'value' notebooks from ASDA - grand sum of 19 PENCE each!!! One of those little things that is so unbelievably naff its actually quite cool...

My brother's seen posters for this event in various locations around Durham (he's a student there). He sent me a picture - not sure how to post it here. John's name is very prominently displayed . The performance has also got some internal publicity. My brother has his own show on the Durham student radio station, and he's been promoting it heavily, along with some tasters of John's music. Here's hoping that it has the desired effect...

You'll need to put it up somewhere and then use the IMAGE tag to include a link to it here. I'd love to see it. I would be nice if they were for sale too, say from Townsend. (hint, hint) The performance has also got some internal publicity. I imagine we'll find out how well it worked soon enough.
