Don't forget that your vote has to be submitted from the address that you've got registered on the Metamatic News E-Mailing list for it to count... wink

Rob,

I'm not sure which address I've got registered
for the mailing list because that pre-dates my joining of this forum by a few years.
I'll send you a test email from the address I think it is.

yeah, I already submitted my email vote, but here's my list anyways

My No-Chance-in-Hell Top 5 is:

- MORNING GLORY (the lovely closing ballad on In Mysterious Ways)
- DISTANT SMILE (off Ha! Ha! Ha!)
- HERE WE GO (delicious reflective ambient electropop from Shifting City)
- UPTOWN/DOWNTOWN (haunting 3am outside beatbox & vocoder from Pleasures of Electricity)
- GOLDEN GREEN (that one with the singing and nice chord progression that closes Cathedral Oceans II)

I also think John should bring Robin Simon along to "large it" on guitar smile

The address which receives the Metamatic Updates I send out. Everyone's best bet would be to find a Metamatic Update, hit Reply and then E-Mail me with their five favourites songs.

Blimey, I don't ever keep those. Read once and delete. Oh well it doesn't matter. I have just become overwhelmed by a huge wave of ennui regarding the whole subject.

Personally I haven't got the T-shirt 'cause depending on the date and venue, there's every chance I wouldn't be able to make the free gig. Now if it were a short 5-date tour with a couple of gigs in the North, I might just be interested......

It's quite difficult to choose from John's catalogue but what sprang to mind that morning were:

Kurfurstendamm
Camera
Car Crash Flashback v2
A Room As Big As A City
The Falling Room

This was of course emailed to Rob.

Am I right in assuming (in the light of a post above) that this "T-shirt gig" will also be pay-on-the-door if simply wearing one of my ordinary tasteless shirts?

Just why is it that 99% of all 'rock' t-shirts are black???

What ever happened to 50% grey, white or Pantone 387?

I've emailed my choices... here goes

1) Wide Boys
2) A New Kind of Man
3) This Jungle
4) Your Shadow
5) Camera

Oh, and if there's any time left at the end of the gig, I reckon John and Louis should give us a blast of "Quirks"! laugh

I'm looking forward to the outcome!

And, I agree about rock t-shirts. Always black and never fit me! I have the smallest one available of the From Trash t-shirt for the gig, and it looks like a dress! Now, if they had printed a women's skinny t-shirt, that would definitely look a lot better! laugh

This is such a great idea.

I'm thinking there is a difference between "All time Top 5" and "5 tracks to play live".
My choice would avoid material from Cathedral Oceans and TCM.
It would be good to think they might move into John's other solo albums (Garden, TGS, IMW) at some point, but as that's a whole new kettle of oysters I don't think that's right for this set either.

So my choice - duly emailed by reply to the Metamatic Update -

Somewhere in the set:
Underwater Dream Sex
Camera

closing with:
I Want To be A Machine
encores:
In A Silent Way
Burning Car

I think that's at least three votes for Camera posted here smile

Once again the thought crossed my mind that this would be a great opportunity to work up one of Louis's songs. I think he deserves it. Something off Closed Gone Fishing would be marvellous...

Im also hoping to get into the gig by paying for a ticket in the usual way as I have significantly failed to buy a T-shirt

Official tshirts are never a good fit. They ignore styling in favour of a universal doesn't offend anyone's taste. I bought a plain tshirt that fitted well & had it printed with my own, simple yet stylish, Ultravox design. It won't get me into any gigs, but it looks good. There are lots of places that do printing. It works out more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Avoid snappy snaps though, they use a dreadful shiny plastic transfer.

There will be some odd or surprising requests coming in, I'm sure. What I hope John will do, is keep an open mind to the suggestions – for example an older track that may have been guitar heavy could still be successfully reworked in full synthesiser glory!

I think it is a good idea with the t-shirt.

For the gig at the feet east in London I paid 12 Pounds for the ticket. For the T-shirt I paid 14 Pounds. So, for my opinion, I got a T-shirt for 2 Pounds 'cause I have to pay for the next gig too.

So, where is the problem?

It will be funny to see all the people in the same shirt! laugh

Great idea with "I want to be a Machine"! I love this track!

But please only if they could invite Billy for playing his brilliant violin solo - for me the highlight of this song!
I saw them performing this song live as Ultravox - IT BLEW ME AWAY!!! wink

It's a song i've always wanted to hear played live. i know it can be reworked as an electronic piece, but only if Billy does the violin on it.

Mr.No is my favourite John Foxx electronic piece, so it has to go in to my top 5.

This is impossible!!!! I've sort of narrowed it down to 12 (and keep thinking of songs I've missed), In no particular order:
Dance With Me
This Jungle
A Room as big..
Stairway
The Falling Room
In A Silent Way
I can't stay long
A kind of wave
The Garden
Running in Traffic
Ray 1/Ray 2
Systems of Romance

But then there's 'sitting on the edge of the world', 'annex', 'a woman on a stairway', 'maximum acceleration', etc etc etc
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Can John play for a whole day, please!!!!!!

I promise I will narrow it down to five songs but it's doing my head in!!
Cheers

In a Silent Way was played at the 93 feet east, if I remember right. Me and Peter watched face into face and smiled as a brand new song was played. I assume it was this song.

I wrote my top five on another point but here it is again:

"When you walk through me"
"Young Love"
"Shadow Man" ( was played in Bielefeld but it's a Killer live!)
"Uptown/Downtown"
"Golden Green" ( don't know if it is possible to incl. it in this gig, but I would REALLY! love to listen to THIS! track live!!

As Craig said ; I could incl.a lot more of songs than 5 ,too.
I'm very curios which songs make the final top five.
What a great idea!

Rob, have you any titels which were mentioned very often until yet?

Or shall it be a secret? wink

I can't remember the tracklisting I sent off to Rob last week but I think it was something like this;

1. Sitting On The Edge Of The World/And The World Slides Sideways*

2. Can't Stay Long

3. Impossible

4. In A Silent Way**

5 Morning Glory (acoustic)

*I know that's 2 songs but one could easily drift into the other - and (in my head) it would be great! laugh

**This is what I originally put, but wished I'd settled on 'Here We Go' - easily my favourite track from the last 10 years.

Hi Shadowman, don't think any of the new stuff was played at 93 Feet East, the only thing of 'Sideways' was the title track played in June at Scala. But if it was played, I think they should 'play it again, shadowman!!'

Just from counting everyones list of 5 tracks so far, this is a rough list of what people want played;

Camera 4 votes
In a Silent Way 3 votes
Here We Go 3 votes
I Can't Stay Long 3 votes
Morning Glory 2 votes
Uptown/Downtown 2 votes
Golden Green 2 votes
I Want To Be a Machine 2 votes

5 of the 8 tracks are from the last 10 years of John's output.

I'm 79,99% sure it was played but I agree with you Craig - would be nice to hear it again live. It is my favourite track , together with Neuro Video , from Sideways.

BTW: Neuro Video would be great to hear live too... laugh

An interesting summary - but sadly not entirely representative of how the votes have been coming in to me. If you want your vote to count (and you're on the Metamatic News E-Mailing list), then drop me a note of the five songs you'd like John and Louis to perform at the 'T-Shirt' gig later this year. wink

That's a shame! As much as I love John's classic material, I was really glad to see that people are voting (on here at least) for the new stuff. I fully understand the inclusion of Ultravox! material; only a few songs have ever been performed and the re-issues have renewed many peoples interest.

I just meant that the songs themselves weren't necessarily the ones which were proving to be the most popular. wink

I am surprised how easily I found making this list, or maybe I will regret it in the morning. I took: songs I love, ones which I don't remember hearing live, ones that are pre-Louis because with Louis they'll presumably sound like the album versions. Then I just crossed out the ones I didn't think would work. This left 8 songs. A few seconds later I had these five:

When You Walk Through Me
You Were There
Twilight's Last Gleaming
A Kind Of Wave
Morning Glory

More haste, perhaps.

I'm going for nostalgia here. I set myself the task of picking one song from the period of each of the three Ultravox(!) albums and John's first two solo efforts and came up with the following. I could spend the next couple of days explaining my choices but won't - I'm sure you all have lives and stuff like that to be getting on with...

1. I Want To Be A Machine

2. Quirks

3. Maximum Acceleration

4. 030

5. The Garden

I'd actually really like to see (hear) a medley of 'The Garden' and 'Twilight's Last Gleaming' (the first segue-ing seamlessly into the second). While they appear on separate albums, I've always seen these songs as two sides of the same coin (like a diptych where the two halves of the work are on display in different galleries).

Yes, a musical concert should always end on a note of extraordinary beauty - or extreme violence. Both work equally well...

Of course, by that I mean sonic violence, not physical... unless Pete Townshend's going to turn up with a few guitars he's grown tired of...
