Having got the super dooper 2-CD Vienna remaster for Xmas (ta Santa) I was thinking of 'flogging' my old copy, although I noticed that amazingly it states C (copyright with circle) year as 1983 and says "First published in th UK by Chrysalis records Ltd. 1983"!?!??

I know thr original album was from the golden year of 1980 so does it mean this CD was manufactured / issued the same year as Blue Monday was issued on 12" vinyl only? naaaahhhh

Is this a record? (if so I will no longer attempt to flog it as it becomes the oldest CD in my collection!)

PS It's issued by Chysalis cat no. 0946 3 21296 2 8

I think the first album issued on CD was Billy Joel's 52nd Street in October 1982, so Vienna isn't far off!

My first CD was 'Vienna' and I bought it in July 1985. That was probably the orginal 1983 edition but unfortunately I don't have that copy anymore. Instead I've got 3 other 'Vienna' CD including the 2-cd definitive edition. I've bought 'Vienna' CD four times.

BTW.. my first ever DVD was 'The Collection' by Ultravox.

Thanks chaps. Actually looking at the CD itself the printing seems a lot more 'modern' than 1983 and it doesn't bear the ADD or DDD lettering used on the first CDs to indicate digital or analogue recording or whatever so I'm sort of sceptical here.
Maybe I should try the EV forum?...or the Antiques Roadshow?

I've just checked my copy of Vienna (which, incidentally was my first CD - well that, and Laurie Anderson's Big Science) and it also gives a copyright 'date' of 1983. But there's no sign of the '0946 3 21296 2 8' catalogue number you mentioned, only 'CCD 1296'. It sounds like you've possibly got a later version to the one I have - as there's no barcode on the back of my CD case and the disc itself is a dull silver-grey colour with the writing picked out in black. The writing on later editions was simply printed onto a plain 'silver' disc. Certainly that's the case with the first editions of Quartet.

I hope that this helps...

Rob

Thanks Rob .. now I really do wonder about its authenticity as a genuine 1983 artefact.
The actual disc states P and C years as 1980! There's also a another cat number LC 1626 and it says 'Made in Holland' ...mmmm are those Disky people behind this?

I have my 'original' cd of Vienna. It has a 1980 and 1985 copyright. No cat number just VK 41296 and DIDX 397 on the booklet and cd. The disc is as Rob described and I do have a barcode on the back of the jewel case.

My 'original' Quartet cd has a 1983 copyright date and my 'original' Rage In Eden has a 1981 copyright date. They both have VK and DIDX numbers and both discs have blue writing on them.

Thanks MaryAnn - I suspect yours is a US release, but anyway after a little bit of research on the usually reliable discogs.com I found mine here http://www.discogs.com/Ultravox-Vienna/release/1150018 which actually has a release date of 1992 and does indeed come from The Netherlands. The cover and disc are the same as mine http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1150018.

Confusingly Discogs.com does list 3 different CD releases for 1983
