i didn't find any topic for the new 2cd remasters of the chrysalis era albums, are there any news, tracklistings, release dates etc? i haven't really followed the ultravox forum lately.

i'm especially looking forward to the remastered rage in eden with the original artwork.

Last posts I read on the subject Cerise & Rob were still not able to confirm track listings or dates.

Billy's website does seem to let news slip earlier than anywhere else though.

We've not announced the track-listings yet - though I think it's fair to say that they are likely to have now been finalised.

We put together a news item over on the Ultravox website back in April which pretty much outlines where this project is at the moment. All things being equal we should be able to expand upon this, with the final track-listings, in the next few weeks.

EMIs project co-ordinator has given us a different date - though not a million miles away from the 15th. An 'official' news story (with track-listings) will be posted shortly.

Here's what we've just posted over on the Extreme Voice website...

*****

We are very pleased to announce that EMI have confirmed the release date for the remastered Vienna and Rage in Eden albums as Monday the 22nd of September, 2008. As previously discussed in our news story in April , we have been closely involved with Ultravox and EMI in the processes involved in once again making these albums available, and we can now confirm the following.

Over the coming months, EMI are looking to release all the Ultravox and Midge Ure Chrysalis-era albums. These will be regarded as Remastered Definitive Editions, and the aim is for each of them to take the following format; Disc One will contain the original UK album, whilst Disc Two will include all of the B-sides and extra tracks taken from accompanying singles, plus (wherever possible) a selection of previously unreleased material. No specific dates have been given for the release of these albums, but we can confirm that the intention is for them to be released in the order in which they were originally made available. As soon as we have further details for these future releases we will make them available on the Extreme Voice website.

Tracks that have previously been available were remastered between March and May 2008 at Abbey Road Studios, London, with the previously unreleased material mastered for the first time specifically for these new editions. For reference, previously available recordings were taken from the original master tapes, and not the production masters as previously reported, while the extra tracks were taken from a combination of other sources that include EMI's tape archive and from recordings provided by Ultravox. Given that the recordings are now up to twenty-eight years old, the extensive work that has been undertaken has given these albums a fresher edge that has not been captured on any previous editions. We believe therefore that everyone will be thrilled with the results.

It's worth noting that some of the previously unreleased material was, by their very nature, not up to the usual fidelity of studio recordings, but they have nevertheless been mastered to the highest possible standard. The decision was taken by Ultravox and EMI to include them for their 'historical significance'. These 'extra' tracks all capture moments that would otherwise have remained unheard and further add to the 'Definitive' nature of these releases.

As you'll no doubt have read in the wider media, EMI have undergone considerable restructuring following their purchase by Terrafirma in late 2007, and therefore new practices have fed into how albums will look when released. EMI have adopted a standard approach on what physical (i.e. CD) releases will take across the company's entire catalogue and in line with this Vienna and Rage in Eden will have a protective cardboard 'O' slip case box together with an eight page full-colour booklet. This booklet will mainly contain appropriate photographs and imagery, but sadly no lyrics. However, the individual album design has remained as we always intended, and in line with EMI's guidelines for digital downloading, a separate twenty page version of the booklet will be made available that will comprise the full design, including photos AND lyrics. We understand that Ultravox were keen that the latter was made available to as many fans as possible. We are therefore very pleased to confirm that a downloadable booklet will be available for all albums through the Extreme Voice website on the day of their release, as well as through all of the other official sources.

As we confirmed in the April newsletter, Rage in Eden is going to be released with the re-instated original front cover (Rage Face) artwork. This was withdrawn by Chrysalis after legal issues soon after its release back in 1981 and has been replaced by alternative artwork on all subsequent editions. The licensing of the 'Rage Face' artwork currently only extends as far as the initial run of the physical release of the album (set at 10,000 units worldwide). Future editions will feature new alternative artwork based around the 'three-horse' logo which appeared on the poster that originally came with the album. This 'alternate' artwork will be used for the digital release.

As stated previously, we are in the midst of writing a second 'All You Need To Know' companion piece - the first of which was completed for the Island Records re-mastered albums back in 2006 - detailing the full process behind the Anthology and remastered album re-releases. We will publish this on the Extreme Voice website in due course.

Thanks for your continuing support.

All I know is that once again the information from newvox is accurate as proved by what I read on the forum. I have also grown accustomed to that on Ultravox and various Numan forums about such things as tracklisting, artwork, release dates, etc.

It seems like a good time to release all of Ultravox's and John Foxx's CDs in deluxe. Such has been their contribution to the evolution of music that they truly deserve the 2-CD releases.

It's fantastic news for all fans. laugh

Thanks to all involved in particular to our hosts of Metamatic and Extreme Voice.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Looking forward to these re-releases too with all the added extras. smile

However, everytime I hear 'I Remember (Death In The Afternoon)' it brings back some painful memories for me, of the time me and a couple of mates tried to form a band back in '83 and we tried to play THAT very song. I was playing my Casio MT-41 keyboard -it had 22 different sounds, including 'synth fuzz'!!!!! wink

Well, when I said 'tried to play' I may well have been stretching it a bit ...... shocked laugh laugh laugh

As I said, painful memories!!! laugh

No, read carefully - this one is the 2000 re-release. Look at the track listing. Reading down a little, it also says one is available now.

I'm sure the new editions will be available for pre-order soon though.

Vienna appears in the Sunday Times Culture section today as a must have re-issue but the article is a little damned with faint praise...

I think the reviewer is a Foxx fan.

It's the possiblity that he's a Manics fan I find horrifying..

Given how the press could/can be with the Midge era Ultravox, I'd take having 'Vienna' classed as a 'Must-have reissue' by a broadsheet in the best spirit I hope it's intended.

Yeah, it's also affected the release date of Vienna as well... frown

I understand that this delay only affects the release of the phyical versions in the UK - electronic versions via iTunes (etc) will still be 'released' on Monday.

I hope that when it arrives you'll agree that it was well worth the wait - aside from the 'restored' original front cover, the six live tracks on disc two of Rage in Eden are excellent, as are the Work in Progress mixes of Stranger Within and The Thin Wall... laugh

I'd be very interested to hear what everyone thinks about these new double-disc versions of Rage in Eden and Vienna when they finally get released...

I don't think that anyone could've anticipated that so much material would all be coming out in such a short period of time - and then we go and add in another couple of albums ( Impossible and Neuro Video )... laugh

I almost forgot the Burning car 12 inch has been put back to about then as well.

All thats missing this year is a DVD of the Luminaire.Mike Barker keeps putting very professional looking snippets on Youtube. They belong on DVD.We can all but dream. wink

Just got Vienna from Amazon (Rage en route from elsewhere). Have to say I thought there’d be a more substantial booklet (credits type size a bit small too) and as a graphic designer I noticed a type snafu. Sadly, the "Vienna" title on the CD label has defaulted to Courier typeface instead of the correct typestyle. Happened to me a few times when I didn’t supply the font suitcases to whoever was doing the run out!

Not able to listen to it yet but hopefully tonight.

The 'error' with the font on Vienna has been discussed on the Ultravox forum. The Astradyne typeface was definitely supplied.

Our original design was for the booklets to be twenty pages - but they had to be reduced to eight pages at pretty much the last minute. The twenty page booklets (for Vienna and Rage in Eden ) are available to download over on Extreme Voice if you're interested. laugh

Typefaces and fonts are the bane of the life of a designer, aren't they!
At my office, we have given up supplying them now and always resort to outlining all text as paths on any pre-press artwork.

Snap! Downside is you can’t phone any typos through as the text is just a solid block. Still, beats the horror of having a set of films and matchprint come back with a defaulted typeface. Worse still if printing from disc and you’ve got 10,000 of the buggers done before it’s noticed.
