This is stretching my somewhat meagre memory but I am fairly certain the facts go something like this;

John was here on a purely promo tour, he did some radio stuff for JJJ and the Sounds interview on Saturday morning, it was here that he told the audience he hoped to return to do live shows. I have a feeling the show was aired live in those days so a good friend and I knew he was in Sydney.
Back then nearly all the international stars stayed at a certain hotel in Elizabeth Bay and while I am not sure whether we had inside information or not we headed up there to stake it out.
Bowie was also in Sydney staying there, so on one side of the road was the huge crowd of Bowie fans and on the other side were my friend and I. We waited and waited. Suddenly John came out of the hotel with a companion and jumped straight into a taxi. Sadly, far too star struck to move, we just gaped and the taxi sped away *sigh*. Sure we had missed our one and only chance we headed into Kings Cross and armed with a huge bunch of roses to deliver, we were just about back to the hotel when we looked up and over the road was John. He was then as he is now, very gracious and warm with fans, he listened to us babble inanities, signed a copy of The Garden and accepted our flowers.

So that's the story, hope you didn't find it dull. It was one of the most amazing days of my young life.

BTW, John obviously had a fan at JJJ and did at least 2 extensive radio interviews in the early '80s. I had copies but where they might be after all this time I am not sure.

not dull in the least!
Its anecdotes like this that make the forum what it is.!

Thanks very much for sharing with us.

And its always exciting to hear of radio interviews to rummage for. Let us know if your recordings do turn up, but you've given us plenty to work on already.

Nice story cool

I can't recall now if he did do an interview on Triple-J. Perhaps he did. I probably missed it.

Yes, the Sebel Townhouse.

I wish I'd thought of doing that. I would have taken some nice pictures.

I recorded all the ones that Triple-J replayed from some English show. I still have the tapes somewhere but, after nearly 30 years, I'm not sure what condition they are in.

Thanks for the story, Katja.

Anybody want to buy that t-shirt? I asked for an XL and got an L (found out after I got home). Will sell for cost price plus postage. By all means, start a bidding war if you want... laugh
Seriously, $40.00 Oz dollars plus postage. I suppose I could just frame it but it's not signed so let me know anyone who's interested.

..Told you there were shadow men coming out of the walls: that and I took my glasses off which wouldn't have helped my estimate any. Staff numbers: three on the door at least initially, the merchandise lass, and one Lachlan (sp?)(technical?) that I spoke to afterward regarding the Adelaide scene and festival overkill (in the cold, hence the pneumonia.) Which suggests about 25. Which really doesn't feel right?

With that font??! laugh
Well I admit, I do like the way they've intersected John and Foxx. And the TPOE image is one of my favourites so it's cool to see it on a shirt.

Thank you Alex for posting the pictures of the T-shirts. A collectors item? I wonder if any will be available in the UK after John returns.

I wonder if there'll be any Japanese ones printed for September?

Peter
