Soft Cell's Metro MRX is a great track!

That's nothing - "Europe after the Rain" has the exact same chords as "Systems of Romance", and they're right after each other on the album! ;-)

I remember way back yonder I went out of my way to buy that particular copy of Smash Hits. Like Craig said you needed a 2p coin to stop in slipping on the turntable. Grand times indeed.

I've always thought of it as a stand alone song not really fitting anywhere. John describes this in Modern Art "I was quite surprised when I heard this again. It was good fun" For me also it's a fun song and I was pleased and surprised in 2001 to find it on Modern Art. (No more having to play that awful flexi disc).

I'm surprised that he did this live and it came accross fairly well considering.

well I'm hoping that by the Brighton show they'll have learnt how to play the middle bit properly! And John will have learnt the words to the songs on Side 2 of Metamatic as well smile

For at least one or two of us -- well, me, at least -- it fits like this:

01. A New Kind Of Man
02. Touch & Go
03. No One Driving
04. Mr. No
05. Miles Away
06. My Face
07. Underpass
08. Glimmer
09. This City
10. Metal Beat

First song on side 2 of the "John Foxx" LP. I never even knew it was an obscure rare track in the UK until the coming of the web.

My guess is it was recorded during the Metamatic sessions but left a bit raw and unused because, as somebody else said, it didn't really fit the mood of the album.

Then somebody suggests providing something for Smash Hits and out it pops. Some months later, John picks up the threads again and fashions it into You Were There.

That's my guess.

It's yellow, it's see through and I've got one in the attic!

This sounds like a pretty sound explanation to me.

Thanks. I never had one myself… frown

I am the proud owner of said yellow thing .. I think there was also a competition to win a synth or something in the same issue.
Other SH flexi discs faves are :
OMITD - Pretending to See the Future (live version) together with a Nash the Slash track (blue colour)
and
another one with a Skids and an XTC track (red colour)
ah yes and a Squeeze one too . .can't remember track or colour tho!
