I bought mine from an HMV sale in London for £1.99 in the early 90s.

Too true Peter. I also still have the video which I bought the day it came out. I also don't have a video player anymore. My girlfriend and I have petty arguments over my 'Here are the Young Men' video - the only official film ever released by Factory of Joy Division, and David Sylvian's limited-edition 'Steel Cathedrals' video.

My girlfriend says they're completely useless (as are the other videos I own) and I should get rid of them/transfer them to DVD. My (sad, pathetic) argument is that these are now 'works of art' and that they're, as artifacts, irreplaceable.

I know she's right, but...i'm not gettting rid of them!

Though I should.

NO NO NO ..........you should do what I did with my old VHS tapes. Transfer them to DVD (so you can watch them) AND save the VHS tape also (because they are what they are). I never unloaded my vinyls either (like all my friends did and came to regret it). Just cannot do it.

Theres all the updated versions of cds and dvds now i.e. sacd's and hd dvd's, but i think the 'old' cds and dvds will not be stopped, or at least not soon.

My real concern is the way mp3 music and mp4 video may replace all hard copys in future. Then things get complex as mp3 and mp4 files need a codec to play them on a PC, and according to the IT industry in five years time there will probably be new codec's for even more complex files. Making even 'old' mp3 and mp4 files unplayable one day. frown

I hope you are wrong about no more hard copies.

They said emails would create a paperless society too and all they did was create more paper.
I will never ever give up my hard copies of anything, be it cd, dvd, video, magazine, etc. Sorry, I like to have something tangible to touch, feel, see, and hear.

Like you Maryann I love to own real things that I can touch and read. I have all my music stored on my PC but I would never part with the original CD's.
