I'd like to say this made me politically active. But, the truth is, there's only so many songs you can hear as a kid with some amphetamine freakazoid going hell for leather on a fiddle-e-dee instrument whilst a troubadour of no fixed abode waxed lyrical about leaving Ireland to look for Mary (in Irish songs of the 70s...rebel or otherwise...they were always called Mary... I've no idea why) so he was now, on a ship, "bound for Liv-ar-poooooooool" Well, I think every Irish song in the 70s was about looking for Mary who was "bound for Liv-ar-poooooooooooool".
I bet the Holyhead line of Sealink made a killing.
Years later though, I have developed a respect for Christy Moore. And this is his standout track. No Mary's required. Unless Mary's a horse;
(*Mary fitted as standard)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-z7M3FZv4E&feature=youtube_gdata_player "Ah Begorra so Radler A grand post there" Wow , so many coincidences in this post Grandad Christy* came on that very same boat from Dun Laighoire to Holyhead whence to Merseyside on a one way ticket Nan , if not from Holyhead was a Gogg from Anglesey , siarad Cymraeg to boot ! I can only assume that Christy abducted her and confined her to a fate as a tealady in a canteen on the docks and had her produce 7 children !! If he'd caught the boat the other way I'd be prattling on about Boston Red Sox rather than the turgid non descript shite currently being served up by The Walton White Sox in L4 ! But then again I wouldn't be on here . I'd be on The STYX or FOREIGNER fora launching such threads as "WHat's your favourite denim waistcoat ? " . "Best way of removing tattoos ?" and " What's the point of shampoo ?"
Like Den/John known both as Christy and Danny because it got confusing My mam rebelled by calling me David Charles after her Dad , so I'm the only first born male male not known as Danny or at times Christy. I could start a one man Chas and Dave tribute act I suppose !
My nan wasn't called Mary btw !
I think I already told you I saw CHRISTY MOORE in a freebie concert in Venice many moons ago ! I was impressed
