Oh dear, why do these threads descend into chaos, and I'm not helping with this post.

That great clip sums up the impossibility of capturing the moment gone of something special when the classic sound of those first Roxy albums was newly hot from the stable, and it dissuades me from seeing reformed bands playing decades later what I missed the first time around. I was too young during that Viva! Live album, ’73 to ’75, and I can only wonder at the experience of that unique sound played onstage - (Glasgow Apollo ’73) - and the atmosphere and style of the crowd back then. Hence I didn’t bother seeing Roxy in Glasgow in January this year, I know it’s not always possible, but I’d rather watch a documented event of the past and just add my imagination to it.

Are you sure that Declan wasn’t just having ‘A slow drag with Josephine’ his female alter-ego?
The evidence is here:
(note clever use of split blue-screen effect bringing Declan on our left side, and his Julie Andrews style Victor/Victoria other self of Josephine on our right hand side, he/she singing something about ‘love hurts’, no Declan/Josephine, its our ears that hurt with this song you play in your duality) -

More evidence here:
The young Declan McManus in New Romantic blue-rinse and specs, minus his sideburns, and having an onstage chin-wag with some posh burd that went about Avenging on TV with her ballet/karate moves. later in life Ms Cor Blime’umley helped the Gurkhas get some long overdue recognition for putting up with all the lah dee dahs of the British upper classes during the early part of the last century -

Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond (about Syd Barrett):

”Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun”

Along with singing songs about Clever Trevor, Billericay Dickie, Billy Bentley, and Plaistow Patricia, Ian Dury and The Blockheads performed songs about –

Sweet Gene Vincent:

”Sweet gene Vincent, there's nowhere left to hide
with lazy skin and ash-tray eyes, a perforated pride”

Blockheads:

”You must have seen parties of Blockheads
With blotched and lagered skin
Blockheads with food particles in their teeth
What a horrible state they're in,
They've got womanly breasts under pale mauve vests”

And, the self-identifying song which was also Ian Dury's criticism of some disability organisation's whose efforts he saw as being patronising and counter-productive -

Spasticus Autisticus:

”Hello to you out there in Normal Land
You may not comprehend my tale or understand
As I crawl past your window give me lucky looks
You can be my body but you'll never read my books”

To contrast that, Bowie sings "I believe in Beatles" in 2002's Slip Away.

Darn fine track, too.

Really? Didn't know that. I expect he was referencing Lennon then.

Yet again , Ivan flies the flag for John's fellow East Lancastrians Barclay James Harvest
THE GREAT 1974 MINING DISASTER

Bowie gets mentioned as does Ted Heath* :Both indirectly
*The wet Conservative leader as oposed to the English Glenn Miller I think they are also casting aspersions about his sexuality !

Heard a song the other day
About a major out in space
And though the song was kind of grey
It took me far away
Heard the news the other day
About a sailor oh so gay
And though his policies were grey
They took me far away
'Cause I couldn't stand the thought
Of being taken in again

Bob Dylan "Highlands" -

I'm listening to Neil Young,
I gotta turn up the sound,
someone's always yelling
"turn it down!"
