As posted in the 'What music are you listening to?' thread, I dug out 'Mael Intuition - The Best Of Sparks 1974 - 1976' for a long overdue listen. What always strikes me when I listen to the tracks from Kimono My House and Propaganda, is the similarity in their musical style to Magazine circa Real Life, despite pre-dating its release by four years.

You have to disregard Ron's quirky lyrics and Russell's falsetto vocals to get the connection, but if you try and concentrate on just the backing music you'll find a lot of it would not be out of place on Real Life, with Howard taking over from Ron and Russell on lyric / vocal duties. There's a little pre-punk edginess to some of the drumming and guitar work, and the bass and keyboards are not dissimilar to the Formula / Adamson combination. There are even bits that wouldn't be out of place on Second Hand Daylight, 'Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth' for instance.

With this in mind, I'm now going to put together a compilation of Sparks / Magazine interspersed with each other, just out of curiosity. I think it will work quite well, but I could be completely wrong. I'll publish my tracklist when I've put it together and had a few listens. Watch this space...

Great idea, and after Ivan I must third that motion Bob! - 'for they say your a nice enough young man, you've got the whole world in your wardrobe, and once you have this project on the tip of your tongue, we'll fall in love awkwardly, and be shocked to find what you've allowed'.

'Furthermore I am sure that this motion don't need no accompanying words, but what will I hear, chit-chat, and clinking glass, and while the man with the hotdog sells lemonade, you will show us what we want to see'.

'Don't forget the relatives, and we don't need any non-relatives while songs are hurled from A to B by hands that looked so smooth to see. But what are you trying to hatch, is it "La la's" with a powerful sting that'll stop any opera or any Bing?'

'We await the results, and you're telling we, that we're lost in shock, because your track selection fits perfectly'
wink
