I haven't spent Christmas in the UK since 2008 so I've already almost forgotten what it's like to see press speculation about who's going to be the Christmas number one in the charts, as if it really matters. It usually comes down to a toss-up between Britain's latest supermarket opener (i.e. the winner of X-Factor, Pop Idol, Britain's Got Talent or Simon Cowell Thought You Were Crap But Here's A Recording Contract Anyway) and some dire, turgid 5hitefest about snowflakes, bells, trees, robins and Santa Claus.

So, my challenge to you fellow Foxxians is this. If John were to release a single to challenge for the Christmas number one slot, what would it be? Here are my nominations:

Burning Carol Singers

Away In A New Kind Of Manger

Yule Tidal Wave

Next?

'Dennis, the electronic-keyboard player'

(To the tune of Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer) –

Dennis, the electronic-keyboard player
Had a very shiny synth.
And if you ever saw him,
You would see his watch hand glow.

All of the other keyboard players
Used to stand around and pose.
But Dennis had old Louis
Bouncing-about by his side onstage.

Then one Foxxy Christmas Eve
Gary Numan came to say:
“Dennis with your synth so bright
Won’t you come and play my gig tonight?”

All of the audience loved him
As they stood amazed in silent glee,
Dennis the electronic-keyboard player
Gigging down the old Troxy!
