Took the post right out of my keyboard, except I always liked OMD - 'Enola Gay' more due to it being the first OMD song I heard.

Martin,

Regarding Mode - I believe they have managed
to get as high as No.4 - Three times, once in each of the last three decades !!

'81 Just Can't Get Enough - No. 4 eek
'96 Barrel of a Gun - No. 4 again frown
'05 Precious - No. 4 confused

Barrel of a gun was held off number 3 by
Mark Owen's - Clementine.

This has always stuck in my memory.....

Too right, Ivan.

I have that on 7", and it's one of my very favourite songs from my early childhood.

‘Souvenir’ by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. I remember buying it without having heard it, and when I took it home and played it - I thought it had number 1 written all over it.

Other than that –

‘Blue Monday’ – nixed by the lack of a radio edit and a terrible live version on TOTP

‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ – I’m not a Beatles fan at all, but do have a soft spot for this revolutionary piece of plastic.

‘God Save The Queen’ – That definitely should have been number one…or was it? Guess we’ll never know!

'Love Will Tear Us Apart' - Joy Division; maybe this time eh?

Soft Cell: Where The Heart Is

A perfect song imho. Been playing The Art Of Falling Apart this week & couldn't remember how W.T.H.I. went. As soon as I heard the opening phrase, everything came flooding back to me & I swam with the memories of my youth, nursing my fragile adolescent heart, once more...

yeah I suppose that was a more obvious no. 1 contender although I remember Maid of Orleans having a wider appeal - it even got played on Radio 2 although they always skipped the 'avantgarde' intro!

Souvenir - good shout too. Fantastic comeback after E.Gay. Not sure what kept it off the top spot.
