I am surprised by that given the Eno inspiration permeating this record.

I often wonder what would come out of an Eno-produced Numan album. He did wonders on Bowie's "1.Outside".

The bass playing on Dance makes it sound too "Japan" for me to hear any other influence.

Yes but Eno came before Japan so one can make the argument.....

Numan cited bands such as Cluster as an influence on 'Dance' - and you can hear that in the long sequencer patterns and textures on tracks such as 'Cry, The Clock Said'. Funnily enough, the members of Cluster also recorded a few albums with Brian Eno! So perhaps Numan was influenced by those too.
