I think I might know the answer to this. Was the person the support act for the 3 acts?

Yes indeed.

A further clue. When first attracted to the attention of WEA records, it was suggested that he should write a new song for a debut single as nothing in his repertoire was deemed strong enough to lead with.

I'll let others see if they can get it. I knew that the person supported China Crisis (as I was there) & Gabriel but wasn't sure about the pickets.

You are indeed correct.
The answer is Howard Jones.

I heard (from Mr Jones) the story behind his debut single New Song in Oxford where he played lots of makeshift impromptu gigs in 81/82 and used to drink / chat / perform occasionally in the Hall of Residence where I was doing my thing.
I pushed a couple of tables togtehr and plugged things in for him more than once.

The things you learn on here ! I take it you managed to throw off your mental chains Martin !
As The Leckyman doesn't seem to be around I'll jump the queue
Which Welsh Valleys boyo and Lancastrian dwarf got to number one against all odds around the same time as the aforementioned Tina Charles ? The latter did the spadework with his great voice whilst the former merely provided nuisance value . A prototype Bez or Andrew Ridgeley no less. They were obviously on class A drugs as they were imploring one form of vegetation not to speak to another !
