Hannah's new project, The Magnetic North – with Simon Tong (once of The Verve) and Erland Cooper. Their first album, 2012’s Orkney: Symphony Of The Magnetic North, was inspired by Cooper’s childhood home and for the follow-up record (Prospect Of Skelmersdale) was sparked by the town Simon moved to when he was 11 years old.

No worries.

She's got an awful lot going on at the moment.

I don't know what the status of the new solo album is either.

I'd come down myself but I'm in the middle of decorating.

Hannah Peel
Awake But Always Dreaming CD & LP (Signed) Multi-Buy
£27.99
Release Date: 23/09/2016

Produced and recorded with long-term collaborator Erland Cooper, with orchestrations by Peel, both in their own, richly analogue studio in Shoreditch, London and at Attica Audio in County Donegal, Ireland, her new solo album Awake But Always Dreaming is a record about memory: the luminous and beautiful formation of memories and the devastating loss or slow, insidious damage to the mind.

The album has the feel of a dream where all of daily life is being expressed and decoded, from feverish rush-hours to the old sunlight of her grandmother’s fading memories. Peel switches between panoramic city images in ‘Standing On The Roof Of The World’ and the dissolving, hallucinogenic moments that define the second half of the album. The album’s closer is a cover of Paul Buchanan’s (The Blue Nile) ‘Cars In The Garden’ which returns memory to childhood – “find the place that we forgot.” Performed with her trademark music box and by way of a sublimely coaxed out, bittersweet duet with Hayden Thorpe from Wild Beasts, this is another fine shift in tone and perspective – from the grandeur and chaos of tracks such as ‘Foreverest’ to something very simple, surreal and yet utterly moving and memorable.

Buy both the CD & LP at a reduced price.

In support of her new album Hannah is doing a date at The Coal Vaults Coventry on 13th September.

It's a triple whammy because Tara Busch & Kitebase are also on the bill all for 11 quid.

Yes i bit their arm for a ticket.I expect more dates.

Details below:-

http://thetinmusicandarts.org.uk/events/kite-base/

SynthCurious Presents – I Speak Machine + Hannah Peel + Kite Base

Tuesday 13 September 2016 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
£12 door, £10 advance, £8 concession.

I Speak Machine are vocalist and synth-nerd Tara Busch and filmmaker Maf Lewis. Together they make brooding soundtracks and horror/sci-fi films, creating audio and visual in unison and giving both elements equal prominence. Their approach is inspired by Spaghetti Western cinema duo Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone, who used to play with score ideas for scenes while scripts were being written.

The Northern Irish artist, singer and electronic composer and member of The Magnetic North, Hannah Peel will be performing live with her electronic solo setup her new album ‘Awake But Always Dreaming’ out 23rd September 2016. This year, her recent collaborations with Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve (aka Erol Alkan & Richard Norris) – was featured on two BBC6 playlisted singles ‘Diagram Girl’ and ‘Creation’ and her band The Magnetic North released their critically acclaimed follow up LP ‘Prospect Of Skelmersdale’ in March. She has also been composing under her new synth-based, space-age alter-ego Mary Casio with an experimental piece combining analogue electronics and a 33-piece colliery brass band (it debuted to a sold out Manchester audience in May). Although modestly she shies away from any compasion, it’s little wonder The Observer recently described Peel as ‘a great singer and a latter day Delia Derbyshire’.

Kite Base is an electronic duo featuring Ayse Hassan (also bass player in Savages) and Kendra Frost. Comprised of two bass guitars, vocals and beats with an industrial edge; blending the craft of pop with organic noise. The name is based on one of the main starting points found in origami, a Kite Base is an opening move made with simple folds to generate a firm and fertile foundation for creativity. It can become whatever you want it to be- simple or complex- based on the imagination of the creator, inspiration and chance.

Really good event! I really enjoyed it but missed the company of the usual faces from this forum!

This wasn't just a gig, and had talks by three people on the subject of new towns and separation from home town.
John Grindrod gave a reading on his love of new towns from his book. Light hearted but very insightful, sadly he didn't cover the new town I was born and raised in!

Amy Liptrot also covered works from her newly award-winning book. She was incredibly open about personal battles that she had fought living in London whilst missing her homeland of Orkney. Maybe it is relevant to the evening that I do not actually miss my own hometown, despite living 11,000km away?

Finally, before The Magnetic North came on, Laura Barton gave her talk, peppered with lightness, keeping the audience fully engaged!

I didn't bring my wife as I thought that the talk/recital section would have been too difficult for her to keep up, which was true, but I really wish she had come as TMN were quite stunning. They commented that the volume had to be restricted due to the venue, but that did not hurt the performance in any way.
Pieces from Orkney and Skem were played, with string and wind accompanying them. Oh, and the drummer. He was the star of the evening for me. Tempo perfect and never intrusive. He did a fantastic job of injecting a unique energy into the set. Perhaps that is why Ms. Peel was dancing so much? Or was her dancing just a manifestation of how much of a good time she was having? They all looked so incredibly relaxed on stage.

The period pictures and film really worked well. I was torn between watching the visuals and watching the band! As a result, I probably could missed the best bits of both!

The band are a real delight to watch. I feel very lucky to have seen this event during my visit. I don't suppose there will be a Japan tour? wink

Now back to the real world in this Hertfordshire new town for another few days!

Would that new town be Stevenage by any chance?

Thanks very much for your summary. Sounds like a very interesting event. Shame I couldn't be there. I will have to keep my eyes open for any future gigs/events and try and make more of an effort to attend.

Ah, very interesting for you to say that as when I saw the first pictures for the Skem album I actually thought it was Stevenage! But no, I am from the next big town down the A1 from there. Just North of Hatfield.
