I read somewhere on the interweb (so it must be true wink ) that, during or immediately after Ultravox toured America in 1979, Robin Simon put an advert in a New York music paper and was invited to a jam session with a band called The Futants, in a cellar studio once owned by Philip Glass.

Nothing came of it, but tis an interestin' snippet...

Very interesting. I wonder if any of it made it to record.

The Futants !
Yes, this was my first group formed in NYC in um,
1978 and lasted till prolly 1979.
Stuart Argabright on drums, syndrum, vocals
Martin Fischer synths
Mike Finley Strat

We started in the basement room of the loft on Houston st.
And yes, we were told by landlord that it used to be P Glass' place.
Futants never did record anything , remaining cassettes stolen or burned in 11th St. Apt.'s demise , used to be some video around but haven't found it !
The session w/ Robin came when I responded to his ad in Village Voice (we were perpetually looking for bassist) a few days after the Ultravox gig @ Hurrahs and gave him a call.
At that moment , Martin F was bk in Berlin so 3 of us did jam for some time on various beats , skeletal song pieces.
Sounded good , nothing came of it though and not sure how long Robin stayed in NYC after that time .
Simply to say -best of everything as we all soldier on through the years .
Cheers

It surely is a small world!

Thanks SA for your visit here and your contribution of course.

Hopefully one day a recording from the Futants will appear from the ashes.

Cheers and thanks Chris C & Birdsong

That story just gives an indication of the panopoly of musik and makers who were loose in the cities at that moment in time.
If Robin had stayed on and played in town with whomever,
it would have been a different world !

Interesting to catch up on the Simon's music actions since ,
seeing a mention of Cowboys Int. is a flashback too.

I have been here to the site a couple times over the years ,
through Mark K- Punk and Dissensus site cross ref.'s,
Good to splashdown

Easy now

Wow! Stunned to say the least! As Martin said - what a brilliant anecdote SA! That whole '72 - '82 NY Scene facinates me so much, it's nice to hear from someone who was there and lived it.

(When they invent a time-machine, the first place I'm going to is Suicide's basement! laugh )

I agree with you, SF and I am sure SA would also, as the grass is always greener.

New York was never the center of the universe for British synth groups such as Ultravox and the like (in fact most people had no idea who they even were). Everything happened at either CBGBs (the Ramones,Blondie, etc) or the dance clubs like Studio 54.
