Only just noticed this - From the Ultravox website:

http://www.ultravox.org.uk/facebook.shtml

"A 2010 FaceBook campaign to see Ultravox finally get a UK no.1 with 'Vienna' is gaining momentum, almost thirty years on from the time that it was held off the top spot by both John Lennon and Joe Dolce.

Interestingly, its founder Martin Slade isn't an Ultravox fan; he became interested in how the two songs seemed to be forever remembered together and felt that there might be a chance to remedy this.

Martin started the FaceBook group in June 2009 and originally planned to aim the campaign for 2011, 30 years since the single was released - but following Rage Against the Machine's successful campaign in December 2009, thought it best to surf that momentum and move it up to 2010.

The FaceBook group urges fans to purchase and download the Vienna single from any legal UK-based source such as Amazon, iTunes, Play, HMV etc.

DON'T DOWNLOAD IT YET! To count for the chart on Sun 4th April you need to buy between Mon 29th March and Sat 3rd April. Join in the fun to make this happen...

Download links for MON 29th MARCH to SAT 3rd APRIL:
Amazon.co.uk - 69p
Play - 70p
iTunes - 79p (track 3, Single Version)
HMV - 99p (track 9, Single Version)

For anyone interested, it seems the date for the campaign has been put back a week (something to do with a clash with a charity record).

I thought it was cos of the clash with the Christian Easter or something ...

I was wondering if it was an appropriate moment for this campaign ... "We walked in the cold air..." - a bit wintery for what is supposedly the beginning of Spring ...

just a thought.

Didn't even make the top 100!

This doesn't sound right to me - how many sales does it need to get to 100? I was thinking under 1000 confused

I think it got to no 1 on Play.com & did well on Amazon but not so good on I-tunes.

I suspect the charts are more I-tunes driven.

Would be nice to find out how many were downloaded

This must be very disappointing for all the people involved.

I've had a quick scan on the net and the sort of singles chart figures you are looking at are: -

Top 10 – 18,000
Top 20 – 8, 000
Top 30 – 5,000
Top 40 – 4,000
Top 100 – 1500
Top 200 – 750

Vienna got to 113, so this gives a ball park figure of under 1500 sales - which seems very low bearing in mind how many signed up on the various promotional sites.

Does anyone know how this compares with similar chart placings in 1980?

Good question Mart .. hard to find figures but I see Wiki gives, for example, Soft Cell's Tainted Love as selling over 800,000 within 1981.

Not sure how many Joe Dolce sold!

That's probly for the whole year tho - it was UK's best selling single in 81...?
Surprising that this data is hard to find. I'v never been able to source stiff like this either.

Oh, and no abbreviations on the name please.
One doesn't like it... frown
