I've just had an e-mail from Townsend Records for a pre-order relating to a John Foxx Limited Edition box set due for released on 1st December!!!

I cannot see this mentioned on the forum and it wasn't in Rob's last bulletin.

Here's the details from Townsend Records -
'Cinemascope' is the first box set of John Foxx's 30 year career and includes five critically acclaimed albums - 'Crash and Burn' (2003), 'Electrofear' (2005), 'Cathedral Oceans III' (2005), 'Tiny Colour Movies' (2006) and 'From Trash' (2006), plus the full 'Cathedral Oceans' DVD. The box also contains six small art prints of Foxx's work. There's a fantastic range of material across these albums, from the 'Eno-esque' 'Tiny Colour Movies' and 'static beauty' (Mojo) of 'Cathedral Oceans' to the darker 'Crash and Burn', with Uncut enthusing about the latter's 'cruel and twisted' electronic pop, adding - 'Not content with being merely relevant, Foxx is still capable of being very good indeed.' In 2006 'From Trash' received some of the best reviews of his career with Fritz Lang, Bowie and Laurie Anderson reference points in glowing praise that appeared in everything from DJ Magazine to Classic Rock! Nation 12's 'Electrofear' is also included in the package - an extremely rare albums including collaborations between John Foxx and Bomb The Bass's Tim Simenon. All the albums are now housed in wallets, featuring new artwork created out of images taken from the original releases.

**Cinemascope is limited to only 1000 copies**

John must think I'm made of money frown .

As there is nothing new on this I'm afraid it's a no no.

I just got the email too. It's a lovely idea but the timing is dreadful, as I am financially tapped out. While I always find the prospect of spending more money on John Foxx CDs appealing, it may simply not be an option at this point even though the price is so low. frown

On the other hand, although there may be nothing new in it, I don't have everything it contains, so I am still tempted.

I've kind of spoiled myself a lot for my birthday already, so if I do decide to buy the box set I may have to be all MikeG about it and wrap it in shiny paper and tuck it away in a cupboard for next year! wink

New artwork and packaging make this a must have at only £19.99.
I call that intelligent pricing. Smart move, I reckon

Timing is surely good, riding in on the 'tidal wave' of publicity John is getting at the moment and with all his high profile work out in the shops.
Makes perfect sense to put out something in time for Christmas that takes new fans further on their journey.

Dear Santa... cool

I was so relieved to see that there's no music in this box that I don't already own. In the last couple months I've bought 12 discs' worth of John Foxx music, and that included a lot of stuff I already have. Even Impossible and Neuro Video are mostly just alternate versions of stuff I already have.

Bring on The Quiet Man, the Robin Guthrie collaboration, and the Steve Jansen collaboration! I want more new new stuff.

This kind of release might help to fund that new material

Let's hope so, but it's not one for this fan smile

And since when was the horrendous Electrofear ever a critically acclaimed album?

Sorry, Martin, but I'm with Steve. The timing is terrible if, like many of us, you've already spent a small fortune on John Foxx CDs in recent months and don't have access to a huge bankroll. Tidal wave of publicity? High profile? With all due respect, HUH??? Aside from some reviews of Glimmer in a couple of magazines and one or two stores having a copy of something in stock, I think all the "publicity" and "profile" have been directed at people already in the know. Furthermore, this box set is a limited edition of 1,000, almost of which will probably be sold online through Townsend. I don't mean to be negative, but I doubt they'll receive much advertising outside of this forum, MySpace, or Townsend. I doubt they'll wind up in many shops. And I doubt they'll be sold to many new fans.

As for funding that new material, I thought that was the purpose of all the other reissues that had been released in recent months.

Bring on the new new!!

Nobody said you have to buy it! eek

But we have no idea how much marketing/networking etc goes on in the wider music/art world because we have no need to look for it and it isn't aimed at us.
Neither is this release I don't expect.

eek eek

1000 copies won't be a 'made up number' (its a reasonable run), and its probably part of the equation that only a handful of hardcore collectors will buy it.

It looks great, and the inclusions of six art prints makes it even better value

Oh dear, oh dear. I really don't know what to make of this. I am already feeling a bit grumbly about having shelled out for 'Neuro' and 'Impossible'. Like Steve I want new stuff, not endless reworkings of songs I've already heard (and, frankly, wouldn't go out of my way to listen to again.)

The selection of albums is also a little odd. 'Electrofear' is neither a proper album nor, as Core rightly says, was it ever critically acclaimed. I'd at least replace 'Electrofear' with 'Sideways', then the collection would be logical grouping of John's most recent releases.

As Martin says the price point is at least tolerable so I'll probably end up buying it.
