At the time of DNA opening preview, I find the whole experience rather too intense to really appreciate the films properly, though this was the only one that caught my eye.
I have always enjoyed the use of words in art, and this (as much as al its other credits) is a very good example of that.

Jonathan, I have tried DM via Twitter about this, but have been unable to upload any tweets to that site for more than 24 hours now. It's driving me mad.

AN excellent piece of work though, and I look forward to the DvD.

Thanks for sharing it with us all

I also attended DNA and had to go back on another day to fully appreciate it. I never saw this film though, so many thanks for posting Jonathan.

I know the film is heavily influenced by Film-Noir, but for some reason I was also reminded of Basil Wright and Arthur Elton’s 1931 film Industrial Britain

It's a great little film - it must of been an incredible amount of work to do.

Many thanks

hi guys thanks for the words of encouragement, its really appreciated. yes the film took a long time, about two weeks of constant work, evolving it into something that matched the atmosphere of the music. i don’t normally spend so long on this kind of project but metamatic is one of my all time favourite albums and john's graphics influenced me a great deal, so it was worth doing well.

and you are all pretty spot on with the references, a mixture of film-noir, british govt films from the 40s and also some of the early 20th century avant-garde animations that LeHaye mentioned in his youtube comments. some of the sounds were very difficult to animate to, because of the lack of rhythm, especially the sequence that uses the lyrics from touch & go

i did another film called a half-remembered sentence from the quiet man for DNA which i am modifying over the next week or so. just making it longer a bit more ambient, so that will be posted up soon.

Enjoyed the style of the film and the animation, and rather than just using the words and found graphics as visual’s for an actual album song, the Clicktrack film is a nice idea in visualising some of the essence of Metamatic in the form of these ‘special effects’ sounds, (as Chris C refers to these as being, in his thread), making for a great composition in themselves.

'core memory' thanks for the positive words about the film. it is worth the work you put into something when it is received in this way.

also a couple of people have emailed me about the a new kind of man 'film title' and where it comes from. it was actually drawn especially for this by a member of my design studio. we of course looked at the old films titles of the 30s and 40s for reference. just thought you would all like to know!
