Thanks MikeG for compiling the list, almost no great surprise really about the top three, or the Ultravox tracks that have made it into the top ten. The Falling Room appearing at 17 is also interesting, it seems to be a track that’s captured the imagination of quite a lot of voters to make it the 6th of the John and Louis tracks to be included in the top 20. As is with Metamatic, I love all the tracks on the Garden album, and although I didn’t vote for Dancing Like A Gun, its still one of my fav’s Hey, no votes for any IMW original album tracks, I didn’t include any in my ten, still, I’m surprised that there’s not even one listed in the 76 tracks that appear in the poll.

A very interesting list, despite being drawn from fewer votes than initially hoped.
It's reassuring to see a lot of John's more recent songs in the list. It's no surprise that Underpass was the winner, although personally I didn't vote for it.

I recall an earlier thread about the Glimmer CD where I posed the question of whose "best of" is it? The question being is it the artist selection or the record company or the "producer" of the CD. I believe the answer was "artist" and I find the correlation quite intriguing. 10 out of the top 20 appear in both sets of "best ofs" - quite a strong match I think. But then you see the absence of Free Robot, Stepping Sideways, Dancing like a Gun and the relatively poor showing of Twilight's last dreaming and the picture doesn't look as well balanced. A fascinating exercise Mike. What is really curious is that seeing this list, I have had a few "Oh yeah - I forgot about that" moments. I analysed this a bit and concluded that my taste changes as I tend to listen to some tracks a bit too much, and tehn banish them the outer reaches of my memory for a while before rediscovering them again. I wonder if we did the same exercise at the end of this year, would the results look the same? then again, we have a flood of new stuff to look forward to this year don't we

Environment, life's happenings, and differing moods. I doubt that my favorite's list now vs 6 months from now would be the same. I missed this poll but my preferences are all over the map at the moment. Interesting thread, its got me thinking...... David

Not sure if this helps, but... For DLAG, I played an old "Garden" CD and compared against "Glimmer". The obvious difference is the huge increase inchannel separation - everything sounds a lot more spatial on Glimmer. On my system, both channels are the same volume, and no jump or difference on "Nerve Gas" although it does sound further "right" if you get my drift. I don;t have both versions on my iPod yet, BUT I have had issues with some songs with equally strong channel separation - on "The Cult's" "Li'l Devil" the lead-in guitar piece is heavily on the left, but sounds very dull compared to my vinyl version. Or at least it did, until I bought new headphones - the plug was overused, and the connector not 100% on the left channel (I note you mention multiple headsets, but was it multiple sockets (i.e. equipment) as well?). Funny thing was, it sounded balanced otherwise! Might work - but if you have taken that path already - humble apologies!

Right now "Never let me go" is my obsessive Foxx track, i just love it. "Sailing on Sunshine" is also up there, and "Looped Los angeles"as well. I also cant get "Camera" out of my head, and "An Ocean we can Breathe" live is getting the repeat button often right now and the newer live version of "My Sex" is just amazing. I am also digging the new live version of "Europe After the Rain". Just my recent favorites........David

The words "Nerve Gas" do the same thing - coming in on two vocal channels one through each speaker. Every word is nonetheless perfectly clear and none of the lines seem particularly 'louder' than the other, and I don't get the impression they 'dropout' very much at all, certainly not enough to render listening difficult. I'm at the office now and have three versions of the song in my iTunes (it's an iMac on a firmwide network; I have a Mac at home, too). I've replayed them all with headphones in, tried different headphones and replayed them, even put the headphones in the wrong ears and replayed them. [/b]just saw this on the Sound-on-sound forum which seems to relate. Most likely, you have 'Sound Enhancer' enabled in the Playback preferences of iTunes. This so called 'enhancer' works by, among other things, feeding a polarity inverted signal to the opposite speaker - so some left comes out the right and some right comes out the left...

I am very partial to Plaza. I love the way John talks about exhibiting the submarine from the Sixties U.S. TV series,Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea... Down escalators come to the Sea-ViewYeah,that would explain the "damaged tape" Plaza on Glimmer Disc 02.That sea water can be a bugger...
