Metamatic Forums John Foxx John Foxx Poll to find our favourite John Foxx songs

I thought it might be a bit of festive fun to have a poll to find our favourite Foxx songs (will this be okay Rob?). I was thinking along the following lines: -

Participants e-mail me their top ten Foxx songs in order. I will allocate points for each of the songs - 10 points for the top song down to one point for the tenth song.

All Foxx songs will be eligible - from John’s solo career, his work as part of Ultravox, all his collaborations (including the singles that have appeared on Jori Hulkkonen’s albums), TCM, CO etc.

To keep it simple, I propose that all versions of the same song be grouped together. For example:

• Underpass will include Overpass
• She Robot will include Free Robot
• My Sex will cover both the Ultravox version and the version recorded with Louis Gordon
• To Be With You will include both Metamatic and IMW versions
• Cities Of Light will include all versions (including Nation 12)

I know this means grouping some songs that are quite different, but I think the alternative would be too complicated. If voters want to indicate that they are voting for a particular version of a song that is fine. If enough voters nominate the same version, I can at least mention this when posting the results.

I will take votes up to Christmas day and post the results on 30/31 December.

I propose that all votes are cast via e-mail using the Metamatic link to my ID. Two main reasons why I don’t want to use this thread for votes: 1) I thought it would be nice if I just announce the results at the end of the year, rather than getting a trickle of votes and maybe knowing how it is going to turn out in advance 2) I wanted to avoid this thread coming back to the top of the pile each time votes were cast, when I’m sure there will be more deserving and important threads in the coming weeks.

What do you think? Let me know if you think I am going about this the wrong way.

Might be interesting to see how John’s newer work fares against the old favourites, and how his solo work ranks against his Ultravox work.

1. First Song (gets 10 points)
2. Second Song (gets 9 points)

You may want to try one of the online poll sites. I don't know if they allow you to choose a top 10 or if they prevent people from voting more than once but it is probably worth checking them out.

I'm currently 'testing' some software which will enable visitors to the site to vote on their favourite song / favourite album / favourite gig, etc. but with one thing and another (you may have noticed that I've been slightly pre-occupied working on things over on the Ultravox website as well) it's not managed to get to the top of my ever expanding list of things to do.

There was also the ability to run polls on The Forum, but that function's been (temporarily) disabled as there was a thread over on the Ultravox website asking on what basis the band should consider reforming. We thought that this was massively inappropriate - and so the function was disabled.

I can confirm that this functionality will be reactivated - probably as part of the relaunch of this site which is currently going through an extensive redesign.

I think you've set yourself quite a challenge Mike, but what's the harm in it?
I tried something like this myself a couple of years ago. Its really hard, because everyone's idea of the 'best song' changes all the time. And there's, what, 300 to choose from?

Having said that
My top ten is on its way to you now, to get the ball rolling.
It is probably not as you would expect.

Not sure that M Foxx would entirely approve though:

The other difficulty of course is how notoriously impossible it is to pick out individual tracks from the context in which they were originally set.
