Alex,

Thanks for posting these articles. An informative and enjoyable read. I was surprised to see how involved John was on the technical and engineering side. He deserves a lot of credit for accurately predicting convolution reverb in 1984. The first commercial convolution reverb, Sony's DRE S777, appeared in 1999 (see link below). John was always ahead of his time.

"I'd like a sampling device that could analyze rooms ... so that you could walk into St. Paul's Cathedral, say, and analyze the reflections accurately enough to be able to store them as a reverb pattern in a machine."

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec99/articles/sonydres777.htm

"One of the most exciting developments in sound processing technology this year was the announcement from Sony of a dedicated reverb unit which applied ambiences 'sampled' from real acoustic spaces. Now the theory is reality."

Regards,
Mike

Many thanks Alex; great to see that Sound On Sound article finally making its way online after all this time! (The SOS site always said it was no longer available).

Was that the last time John appeared as a cover star on a magazine?

I don't want to seem demanding or anything but if you could track down the 1983 interview from Electronics & Music Maker magazine where John was bizarrely compared to 1950s rocker Eddie Cochran, that would really make my day!

There's an issue of that magazine at the top of the page... wouldn't be that one, would it?

All of these scans have come from fans, rather than my own, non-existent collection of old magazines.

If someone can be concerned: an interview for an Italian magazine (1983 Golden Section tour)

I am very 'concerned' cool

Thanks a lot for posting this. Now, if only we had a translation...

John played the Palladium (??) in Rome, 7th December 1983 so I presume the pictures are from that show, and he was interviewed in relation to it? There were earlier dates in Milan, Bologna and Florence.

Is the magazine called '2001'??

I owe Alex a review that I really need to finish, but I'll have a go at translating this just as soon as I've done that smile . It looks like a really interesting piece - thanks, Federica!
