I've always liked TGS. It seems like an obvious progression from The Garden. I wouldn't mind a slightly remixed version of the album; I love "Your Dress" but could do without some of the wordless vocalizing at the end, for example. There aren't many albums I've bought three times and am about to buy for the fourth time, but this is one of them.

I bought the album on its release and felt at the time that it was a natural progession from The Garden, especially tracks like My Wild Love and The Hidden Man.However I was never impressed with the overall sound. I thought the mix was poor and the tracks didn't sound as full as they could have been.

Having played the Virgin albums a lot recently, I still maintain the position I have always held. This is the weakest and least inspiring of the four by a long way.
It is the most unchallenging and 'of its time' album that John Foxx has made. To me I'm afraid it really does sound, in places, like it was put together in a couple of weeks.
Yes, there's the inspiration and 'buzz' that goes with intense creativity like that - and it does include some great songs - but it bears too many hallmarks of presets and contemporary 'pop music' ideas for my personal taste.
It was a shot at the charts that sadly missed, and proves (at least to me) that John was/is always at his best when not aiming for that kind of commercial recognition.

That's not to say I'm not looking forward to the re-master and that its not still a good album (head and shoulders above most other material from 1983!!) but for me its the out-takes and alternate versions that make this edition more interesting and justifies a purchase I might not otherwise make.

Your Shadow quote: "However I was never impressed with the overall sound. I thought the mix was poor and the tracks didn't sound as full as they could have been."
Birdsong quote: "I'm afraid it really does sound, in places, like it was put together in a couple of weeks."

Overall... in places.... ??? Hmmm, I'm currently listening to the Edsel release as an MP3 running through my Creative Audigy 5.1 setup on the PC at the moment and I couldn't disagree more. This album's layers, multi-track, band members create what is in my opinion a 25 year old masterpiece. Even the digitised growl on Running Across Thin Ice With Tigers is redeemed by the line "There was an angel in a ruined suit stranded on Broadway ay ay ay . I gave him change, and he gave me the time of dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy."
