Many years ago i'm pretty sure i came across an interview with John, in which he stated that he came close to being the lead singer with the Clash, as Ultravox & the Clash were both on the same touring circuit & met up several times. Is this true?, or am i totally mixed up.

According to John Foxx, he was "almost" asked to join the Clash. You can read the whole interview here:

I heard this too. In another interview I'm sure he mentions that he was also asked to front Roxy Music! In the studio or on tour I'm not sure - but I think it was around the Flesh + Blood / Avalon period.

Strange, I can actually picture him fronting The Clash, but Roxy Music? No chance - he's far better than Ferry any day.

Heard "Another You" recently? wink

And on his last solo album, Bryan Ferry had a song called "Hiroshima Mon Amour" - I haven't heard it but I don;t think it's a cover version.

Coincidence, or did John leave his notebook behind when he went for the Roxy Music audition?

Yeah, "Another You" has a very Ferry-esque vocal smile

Ferry's "Hiroshima Mon Amour" is not a cover (although I'm sure he would do a fine job of covering said song). It's not a bad track at all - typical Ferry solo stuff. His "Frantic" album was a mixed bag though and I kind of lost interest after that. He'll never beat Mamouna in my opinion.

Anyway in short - it's a different song!

I have heard about his fronting Roxy Music also. It would have been a bad mistake on John's part. New singers almost never make it, especially if the old ones are still alive!

Glad he didn't -- if he did, we probably wouldn't have all those cds in the same fashion that we love now.

Hiroshima Mon Amour was, of course, a film by Alain Resnais made in 1959. Its credited with starting the French new wave of cinema.

There's a note at the bottom of that Wiki page that lists all the songs inspired by the film. But it doesn't mention Ferry.

The voice of John better than Ferry's? eek Excuse me, but Bryan Ferry is one of THE BEST crooners in the world! I think it's safer to judge JF on his own merits ... wink And he does a good job, doesn't he? smile

I remeember 'Smash Hits' reviewing 'Your Dress', saying that JF was trying to do a Bryan Ferry impression then some woman starts wailing in the background. It didn't get many stars. I always thought it was John doing the wailing and layering his voice. But back to the original discussion, he sometimes sounds like Ferry, but moreso Bowie
