Well that was all rather jolly. I think the crowd from here were sitting in the front row - I remained diffident and sat towards the back.

It was pretty much as I expected. John said a few words about the films and the collectors/collections before the movie itself began. Once the movie began he stood to one side and played a bit of synth over the top of the tracks from TCM which accompanied the films. (And he actually looked/sounded like he was playing the synth this time, unlike the Metamatic gig...)

The movie itself consisted of the films with linking explanatory text about the people who made the original movies. These links contained some additional music which I have not heard before and I think is unique to these performances.

The films themselves were mainly American with a couple from the UK. I think the films were presented in the same order that they appear on TCM and, having seen the films, I now understand the TCM booklet a lot better. Highlights for me were Stray Sinatra Neurone, Skyscraper and A Peripheral Character.

The presentation lasted a little over an hour, after which there was a brief Q&A session.

Bootleggers were much in evidence, including one in front of me who recorded the entire show on his camcorder. One couple left after twenty minutes, perhaps thinking they'd come to see a compilation of 'Carry On' clips or something.

In the Q&A afterwards John said that he and Mike Barker now had around 30 to 40 films in this series and there might well be more presentations, and presumably, CDs of music. He also stressed that due to copyright issues it was unlikely that TCM would ever make it to DVD, at least not in its current form.

Leeds Town Hall is something of a venue. I can best describe it as a Victorian Baroque music hall. I suppose, if I am being honest, it wasn't the best venue for this sort of work - for one I would have liked a much bigger screen. But the acoustic was excellent and the music sounded fantastic.

Hi!

What a fabulous evening. TCM still evolving, and sounding and looking superb. The venue was stunning and the sound was crisp with no distortion that I could notice. I sat on the front row and was surrounded by people of all ages, who watched intently to John's performance (apart from people playing with their bloomin' mobile phones - so annoying). Great to see Tessa and Geoff, Peter, Gem, Elaine, Craig, Steve, Sarah, Alex and Alexa! I must say hi to the guy that chatted to me outside the venue telling me about seeing Ultravox in the late seventies!

John was busy signing things and chatting to folk after the show in the beautiful entrance area, and luckily I managed to have a natter with him myself.

I'm sure that TCM was well received by all, as it seemed such a perfect venue for this performance.

Hope everyone had/has a safe journey home!

Best wishes

I'm just sorting through 132 blurred photos from last night!

Despite being late and ariving just after Stray Sinatra Neurone had started, it was a great evening, but just too short!

Fascinating and captivating to finally see the tiny colour movies themselves, and to read the information in the segues between each track. The new arpeggiated loops that accompanied the introductions were really cool too, adding a sense of 'new' to the music.

John looked very well and was as patient, charming and chatty as ever after the show.

It was a pleasure to finally meet Sarah, Phil, Tessa and Gem and it was good to see Steve-now-with-goatee again, and anybody else who I might have talked to and don't know who you are!

Oh and Peter. We liked him so much, we took him home with us! wink

I'll get photos and a kind of review together for Quiet City over the course of the week - please e-mail me with any decent photos (anyone!) since I don't have many!

Firstly I'd like to thank Alex and Alexa for their grand hospitality and running me to Chesterfield station this afternoon.

I had a great nice last night and it was a pleasure to meet with forum members once again.

I loved the venue and the sound was awesome at just the right levels and pleasing to my ear. It was nice to sit down and immerse myself into the films and music. I thought the venue suited TCM to the ground. I was even brave enough to ask a couple of questions during the Q&A session

It was nice to chat with John afterwards and he obliged by signing some album covers for me and at the very end having a photo taken with him.

I thought the venue was very grand, and just perfect for John. It would heva been even better for a Cathedral Oceans performance.

It was a pleasure to accommodate you again Peter - no trouble at all! Our kettle is enjoying a rest now! wink
