Alex makes a good point and alludes to what I said earlier in another thread.
I agree that Metamatic 2007 has rather overshadowed Sideways, the best album from John and Louis, and this is exactly what I fear for other releases.
Is there a danger that a definitive re-issue of the Garden and extra/interview CD will somehow 'clash' with, for example, the Foxx/Guthrie work?? This could be disastrous for both.

Or the Steve Jansen collaboration being 'overshadowed' by a Best Of compilation. It has to be right, and carefully planned.
New material is the only way to move forward if John still wants to be considered as a contemporary artist.

As far as I am aware, there is already enough material old and new to sustain a release every four months or so for a couple of years. More haste, less quality. Seriously, 2010 will come around and we still won't be short of Foxx material.
John's pedigree is cast iron, and it would be a mistake to cash in on current popularity for the sake of a few quid quickly. Unless that is the way to go? Get the re-issues over with sooner rather than later, and then use some of the revenue to invest in a serious programme of new releases between now and 'the end of time'...

I don't really like to predict or speculate. But what I will always stand by is my support for new material. Martin, you hit the nail on the head with your comment on John moving forward, and remaining to be seen as a contemporary artist.

Now is certainly not the time to start looking to the past. In fact, just why Metamatic was chosen for reissue at this particular time always baffled me, but I guess you have to start somewhere! The lack of albums in the shops certainly backs up the need for new, definitive remasters.

Metamatic being John's seminal work, was the logicaal one to tour, especially at this current time with the trend of playing whole albums live.

I think next up will be the new best-of, followed by gradual album reissues. I suspect this may be an ongoing thing while John focuses on his current projects.

I certainly doubt there will be any more album tours, and I don't think we really need any. I think in one of Steve's last blogs, he said something about the Luminaire gig probably being the last electro show until later next year... which could indicate that by that time, there will be some new material to promote.

Forgive me for choosing one comment 'out of context' but I disagree. Metamatic now is perfect timing.
Metanym (CO111) and Tiny Colour Movies all draw on Metamatic big time and pull the circle just. As far as I'm concerned, the timing was perfect.
My problem, until VERY recently, was seeing how re-issues of The Garden etc moved John forward.
I still struggle with that, but I am beginning to recognise how some tracks (like Hand Held Skies or Points of Departure, for instance),do hint at some retrospective progression.

That said, I'm in no hurry to see any more re-issues,even The Garden. Great as it may be, what part does it play in the future of Foxx? I find some comfort in the sense of closure and completeness surrounding Metamatic 2007. It wasn't performed alongside Tiny Colour Movies by coinkydink...

I did feel that TCM got overshadowed by 'From Trash' and 'Sideways' last year (-was it really only a year ago 'From Trash' was released? It feels so long ago!)

The most releases we had in one year was 6 (TCM, Nation 12, Hidden Man, Live From A City…, From Trash, Sideways) – two of those were tour only CDs and another had been recorded nearly 15 years previously.

Still, 3 is quite a lot of releases in one year from one artist but can we see him doing something like that again?

I very much doubt the re-issues will affect any release of new material – as Martin’s imagined release schedule posits; they’ll probably simply be issued at the same time to heighten awareness of the new material.

For all we know, the collaborative stuff may appear on other labels. Jansen is part of his brother’s label, Samadhi Sound and has a solo album out next week. Guthrie’s works now appear through Darla.

I think the re-issue of 'Metamatic' was right though; press-wise, John and Louis got much more coverage than previously, and hopefully some of that spotlight will fall on the latest material.

Agree all round though – as much as I want a shiny new Garden to go with my 4 vinyl copies, 1 cassette and CD edition…I think I can wait if it means the newer material gets through!

Out of curiosity, were any of John's recent albums such as TCM, Trash and Sideways promoted in any way on the Metamatic tour? I thought it was a great idea of Steve's last year to blitz the Numan Teletour with excellent John Foxx postcards.

If there were promotional items showcasing the latest material Alex I didn't see any.

They had all the recent album covers on - COIII, Electrofear, From Trash, TCM, Sideways and LFAR I think. Good bit of advertising.

It is possible that John would not want it any other way! It seems to make Sideways more special somehow.
