I remember Our Price. I guess now in most major towns and cities you're left with just HMV and Virgin. I'm also left with little option but to buy on line and the amazing thing is on line I can almost buy any obscure or deleted item that I've no chance of finding in "real" shops

Hemel Hempstead is certainly not a town for the fashion conscious, as my daughter can testify unless you like the cheap and cheerful stuff from Primark. (RANT OVER). frown

As for me I'm the original Mr Scruffy. Plenty of mobile phone shops though and I won't change my old phone which is already obsolete until it gives up the ghost. eek

Don't worry Alex about being Grumpy, one pair of my socks come from a Disney store and they have Mr Grumpy on them. laugh

It's no surprise there are fewer retail outlets when there are now so many online places to buy music and books etc.

We have a superb Oxfam Music store just round the corner from my office, and at least two second-hand record stores in the suburbs thatare positively bursting with material. It's great fun browsing in them.
I am watching to see what effect the USB-turntable has on this market, because all of a sudden old vinyl will get a much-needed boost as people by cheap back cat stuff to put on their MP3 players.

One of my friends is assistant manager in Oxfam music, and she has commented to me recently on the significant increase in sales of original cassette recordings of albums. Apparently, cassette-release albums by the likes of Kylie, Madonna and the Police (??) are now quite valuable.
Is there such a thing as USB cassette player that could be boosting these sales?

They do make USB Cassette decks:-

I've got quite a few old cassettes. You dont really need USB to get them digitized though a PC will do that easily enough with the right leads.

I was equally surprised at first

But then I thought, hey - I play cassettes in the car, so of course they do. My copy of ACDC's Back in Black got an airing last week and sounded as superb as it ever did.

I still have some cassettes, both studio versions and 'homemade' recordings. Hardly play them but I do have the capability to. Recently bought a Sony 'boom box' and it has cd/cassette player.

I've digitized a number of cassettes in recent months. I have old cassettes by some old friends of mine and wanted to preserve them. Worked pretty well, and you don't need any specialized equipment (other than a tape deck and cables). As for software, Audacity is free and easy to use.

I've even digitized a few cassettes of records I taped onto cassette for walkman listening, because I don't have the setup for digitizing LPs and I haven't been able to find certain records on mp3 or CD. The results are not CD quality, but they're listenable.
