I've played the new CDs through just the once so far, and that was during a car journey so not in ideal circumstances.

I want to say a big THANKYOU to Steve Malins for pulling together a really compelling interview with John on the making of Metamatic.
It flows very well, almost conversationally, and Steve's questions are well-researched and come from a journalist with a sincere appreciation of what his subject is talking about.
It's an intriguing, intelligent, candid, sometimes revealing, honest and often funny account of a definitive era.

The music chosen has enormous value not only for its rarity and 'previously unreleased-ness' (which will appeal to everyone) but its well placed in the intevriews and used to illustrate points John is making or add context to his comfortable, relaxed delivery of fascinating anecdotes and stories.
There's quite a lot that has been covered in media interviews both at the time and since, but even more that hasn''t.

I'd say this is a 'must have' album if you really want a deeper understanding of Metamatic, where it comes from, what it represents and what it achieved.

Congratulations to everyone involved. Unlike many interview discs I've heard, this I think has considerable 're-play' value in the longer term.

Far far more than 'Retro Future' I think, which is why I chose not to buy it. Personally speaking. :p
But I don't want to go upsetting people

Again Martin Thank you for your review. You should have been a journalist, you write honest reviews and they are so readable without going OTT
I've played Metal Beat but's something I need to concentrate on in a quiet situation. So tomorrow I'm going to put in on to my walkman and listen while walking my dog when no one will disturb me.

At the moment I'm listening to Retro Future.

Peter

Sorry!! I seem to be replying to almost every thread!!(well...I have got 3 days of postings to catch up on laugh )
Not had a chance to spin Metal Beat yet,but like Peter I'm currently listening to Retro Future, and loving it!!
Completely different to Exotour, the fact that it IS live and not "Studio-live" really shines out laugh

Peter, thank you cool .

I'm grateful and touched that people seem to appreciate the way I write.
Hope in doing so I can inspire everyone to chip in with their opinions and interpretations however they are presented.

Many thanks for that Martin!

I too like the interview discs. I find myself going back to them again and again, and I never get bored of hearing them because there seems to be something I missed on previous listening that renews the whole experience again.

The repeated play thing is something i picked up on in Martins post too. Must admit i dont replay interview cds too often, but i find artists like John, Billy*, and Numan to be very interesting. It often makes you go back and listen to the music again from a different perspective.

*When you finally untangle what Billy actually said. smile

I tend to find that once I've played the interview CD, that's it. The information has gone in and I rarely play them again. But having played them and learnt new things, there's a certain joy to be had in owning the said CD.

And it certainly does in most cases put the music into a new perspective.

I am really looking forward to hearing Metal Beat (thanks Metal Beat!)

Just had a nice long walk and listened to the first Metal Beat disc. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked listening to the background of Johns concepts and ideas behind the making of Metamatic.

Thanks to Steve Malins for arranging this interview with John.

John and Steve IMHO felt at ease talking to each other.

One tiny Criticism is I felt two of the tracks that introduced each segment especially Touch and Go and No One driving faded out far too early. I would have much prefered to hear the complete track being different versions from the originals..

It'll be probably Wednesday before I get around to listening to disc 2.

Peter smile
