The improvisation by Jack and Bruno wasn't my "cup of tea". I enjoyed John's playing and the reading of the Quiet Men book. It was nice to see John sitting behind a grand piano.I liked John's prints but they are way beyond my means.

Was John playing on a Yamaha grand piano? Another classic one is the Steinway.

I'm really pleased that John is now finding time for the Quiet Man. It´s always been his banner!

Can't say about the appearing in 'In The city', but I know it was in the second (and final) copy of 'The Service', which must have been about June/July 1983. Either way, it was incredible on the night to see how John's projects evolve - a 25 year old piece of text being accompanied by music that is at least 3 years old if not more.

I was meaning to get a look to find this out on the day. As I was staying in a hotel near to Fulham Palace, I thought that it would be a good idea to do a 'dummy run' of the walk from the hotel to the palace to get a good idea of how long to allow as to arrive there on time on the evening. It was a lovely afternoon, and as I got to the palace I could hear the pianos being tuned in the marquee. As Peter and Craig (and a few other people) discovered on the evening, I was desperate for a sit at one of those pianos! Tessa was trying to get me to go and play 'Underpass' during the interval on the one that John was about to use (after Jack and Bruno had done their turn), but I don't think that would have been appreciated! So, alas I'm not sure what make of piano they were. The reverb unit that John used gives a gorgeous sound. I'd love one.

In fact! Steinway is much better than Yamaha.

The Steinway is an excellent piano. The best results can be heard by Billy Mackenzie´s keyboard player Howard Hughes on God Bless The Child and This Flame from the Associates BBC Sessions.

However, John used the Yamaha CS80 to obtain the Cathedral like sounds on The Quiet Man tracks, as released on cassette back in the 80s. Not so long ago, my wife played a few basic chords on a friend's Yamaha piano and I thought I was listening to Quiet Man 3 from the tape deck! Spooky but very satisfying.

I´m in the process of studying keyboard, better late than never and would like to expand on the Quiet Man tracks once I obtain a much desired piano. Expensive they are. Just have a basic mini synth to explore. :rolleyes:

I too would love a piano. My synth has various lovely piano sounds, and I use the software editor that came with it to add effects, such as reverb and chorus. But I know what you mean about the Quiet Man. I have been twiddling many a knob recently to try and replicate that 'Translucence & Drift Music' piano sound. Can't quite get it right. However, Alesis make great reverb units, and I'm not sure if this is what John used at Fulham now I think about it, and these can create many lovely effects. Good luck with the keyboard practice!

Yes, Chris you're right, it is expensive to buy a piano but it is the same as you would by a car - there are high quality cars and cars for lower costs...It's a question of Quality! If you buy a Steinway, it is an investment for the next generations in your family. You can play on it hundreds of years, there were the best materials used for building them.


I'm proudly noticed that Harold Budd used a Steinway in Brighton 2005.

So if you want to buy one - come over to Hamburg and I show you the factory...
