I'm off on holiday in a few minutes, so my review of the evening (which I started on the train last night) will have to wait a couple of weeks

Suffice to say it was an amazing night.

I'd sum up quickly by saying the exhibition is rather smaller than I expected, but the prints on display are bigger. Reasonably priced too - worth £500 of anyone's money.
Shame about the weather and the restrictions on outdoor performance.

Hi to everyone I met during the evening - Sarah, Geoff, Simon, Paula, Kim, Peter and Craig - always good to catch up, and Garry - great stories, great taste! to Steve Malins for getting it together and the inspiring conversations; to Rob for being there and the invitations we all received (if it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have had this unique experience) and to Mark Fisher for his understanding, vision, and patience with all my questions. To Dennis (nice shirt!) at Arthertz - great show, thanks for explaining the ideas behind it) and of course to John Foxx for all those Tiny Coloured Moments.

It is wonderful to see him grinning behind the piano. Surely there's a feeling that 30 years of work is coming together in so many ways. More ideas flowing all the time.
We are indeed in for some magic over the next few months
The Quiet Man works so very very well.

It was good to finally meet up with a few of the people on here – I’d also like to say hello to Martin, Peter, Rob and Sarah ( - hope you all got home safe) and of course John and Steve.

I can’t write my thoughts about it either at the moment – my head is full of John’s piano, I could still hear it on the train journey in this morning, I can still hear it now, just under the hum and noise of the office.

I would love to have purchased one/all of the digital prints – they're £500 which, quite frankly, is giving them away. I did however, liberate 10 programmes from the event – the front has ‘Cathedral Oceans Head 3’ on it and is basically the Retrofuture website in paper format – nice, posh, smelly paper format, and the first 10 to e-mail me their addresses gets a copy; garryhensey@hotmail.com - please use my direct e-mail as Rob is a very busy guy!

I'll let you all know when the 10 have gone.

I had a brilliant evening. It was a great pleasure to see friends old and new.

Johns art work is really very good. Price wise way beyond my means. I know and John admitted that it's taken 30 years for the Quiet Man project and it's still on going. I hope that when it is finished it'll done on a CD format with John playing the piano in the background exactly the same way it was performed on the 5th July.

Hi everyone!

Yes, it certainly was a great evening. Great to meet you guys from Metamatic, and of course I finally got to meet John himself.

His performance was fantastic, sprinkled with a few little smiles from behind the piano, and as Martin said, I think this was because he's happy with what he's doing at the moment. John had a little chat with Tessa & me at the end, as we watched TCM being projected. He seemed really delighted with the way it looked, and it was captivating to watch.

An exciting year for John, and for us too.

A CD with the Quiet Man stuff would be interesting... - as a DVD with the TCM film material would be too! I saw it on the premiere in Brighton too and it was brilliant!

It's a nice idea we have a chance to watch it again at the ICA!!

What exactly did John do/play?

For anyone who wasn't there:

retro-Future is an art exhibition of works by a handful of contemporary artistrs, including John Foxx. Eigtht or so of his digital prints (about 1000 x 600mm ish?) are on display in two galleries in Fulham Palace, interspaced with other work by different artists. Cathedral Oceans DVD (3) is being shown on a loop in the second gallery, and the music is being played throughout the house. The prints are for sale. £500 each.
During this preview evening, John and the others were on hand to talk about the work etc, and just 'mingling' with press, art critics etc.
At 8.30 in a marquee in the garden, we had an improvised piano performance by Visions Jack and Bruno , followed at 9.30 by a half hour 'performance' by John Foxx. He played for half an hour some improvised treated piano (some of which was from the Translucence album), accompanying a reading of the first chapter from The Quiet Man Story. The reading was by a colleague of Mark Fisher of k-punk/abstract dynamics (Justin...?? sorry, I forget), and his BBC-archive voice was absolutely perfect for the part.
I still have to cross-reference the text, but as far as I know it was the piece originally published in the In The City fanzine around 1980/81. Amazingly relevant - it may have been slightly updated but I need to confirm.
After this, John was again around to converse with, mostly in and out of the Great Hall where Tiny Colour Movies was being shown projected large onto the wall. It looked and sound fabulous in this context. Clever use of the corner between ceiling and wall
