this is impossible task and i won't even try, but these tracks should definitely be included:

030
burning car
europe after the rain
dancing like a gun
endlessly (1982 version)
shifting city

actually modern art is pretty good comp as it has most of those already...

Same here Peter!
I can never get/understand these "What would you put on?" threads and very rarly post on them, basically because there is so much to choose from and some songs fit better with different moods and times of year ect(for example, spring summer songs tend to be upbeat uplifting songs where Winter songs are the slow, dark, moody ones )

Hi Everybody, (first post ever btw )
Can i chip in on this cd thing? is your friend limited to playing cdda (regular format) cd's only? If she has a dvd player they can play mp3's (well, a lot of them do) - if so, you could burn all the songs listed above, plus more, as mp3's to one cd and then she's merrily on her way smile
you could add JFoxx's Ultravox canon to the collection too, I would definitely include "Just For a Moment".
Just my 0.02 dollares worth,

WILL:that is exactly my reason for posting in the first place - a. because I don't even know all of John's work and b. I just wanted some advice!
And in fact i did get some good suggestions and also prompted me to listen better to songs I didn't know so well.
Mission (almost) accomplished.

Firstly I am honoured to have 'provoked' your first post!
Yes, in fact that was part of my initial problem, I had to make a 'conventional' CD format, not mp3s or what-have-yous. Plus the fact that a person who is not that keen in the first place would hardly have the time / patience to plough through "the collected works". It has to be something whcih can grab / keep attention.
Thanks for the suggestion of Just For a Moment anyway.

My attempt at an 80 min tracklisting can best be described as brutal! No Ultravox! stuff - purely solo. Didn't include anything from TCM either. I tried to stick to a 1 single & 1 album track for each period - but as there's no real singles later on it became a grey area:

Underpass (single edit)
No-One Driving (single remix)
Europe After the Rain (single edit)
Walk Away
Endlessly (single mix)
Sitting at the Edge of the World
In Mysterious Ways
Here We Go
Through My Sleeping
Camera
Broken Furniture
Impossible
A Room as Big as a City
In a Silent Way
Harmonia Mundi
Quiet City

Nice one Garry - some nice selections, and again some tracks I'm not completely familiar with so I'll give 'em a spin.
Notwithstanding your 'solo only' rule I would at least include Slow Motion.

But then I'd have to include 'Can't Stay Long', 'Just For A Moment' etc etc - had to be brutal! wink

Like Peter said - it would be easier to compile a list of what didn't go on!
