i actually agree almost completely with what mr. chapel pond ... erm ... chruch puddle ( i jus' had to "squeeze" that one in ;-) has written here before me - except that i really DON'T like "the golden section" cover & also the front & back cover of "from trash" isn't really a favorite of mine !

imho , especially the "translucence / drift music" double-album cover is really ... ugly & doesn't "speak" to me @ all , sorry ! :-/

my favorite single cover ( currently ) is the 12" cover for the new version of "endlessly" in 1983 ! :-)

i also like the "coČ" ( "cathedral oceans II" ) album cover very much ( more than the others ) & the "sideways" album cover is pretty cool too - imho , of course ! ;-)

I'm in the process of putting all of the associated album / single artwork on-line - please bear with me. And the single you referred to (with the empty suit on the chair) was Miles Away.

The Canadian edition of Metamatic uses the 7" gatefold art of 'No-One Driving' - that's a really nice edition to see. Superb B/W photography and the cover is a weightier cardboard than what vinyl comes in here. I haven't looked at my copy in a while now but for some reason the Canadians put different tracks on it too; 'My Face' being one of them I think.

Yeah, it's one of my favourites too - the full track listing (which does indeed include My Face) can be found here . The Canadian version of The Garden also had a slightly different track listing to the regular version - a different running order, and Fusion / Fission was replaced with This Jungle. Also note that the title to the track When I Was a Man and You Were a Woman was abbreviated to just When I Was a Man...

Cheers Rob - that's the one!

I remember buying it for the bizarre tracklisting. It looks like an 'A's and B's sides collection' with a few album tracks thrown in. I wonder why they never went with the normal Metamatic?

Anyway - I'm diverting the subject; the heavy card art and photography - it's a gem!

The Canadian edition of The Garden has a white cover with the 'John posing by the window' photo that was on the inner sleeve as the main pic (I think. Don't think it came with 'Church' either.

thanks for this info. i've seen that white sleeve (or i recall the sleeve was kinda cream-coloured) garden once, and wondered about the tracklisting.

i have also that canadian s/t album, pretty cool but was it really released instead of metamatic there? i think the cover looks like it's meant to be just 7" though, but i guess it would work well as a cd-sleeve too.

Yep. I got the grey album in 1981, and I think it must have been close to 1990 before I found a copy of Metamatic. The UK habit of releasing singles that weren't included on LPs led to a lot of North American releases being substantially different from UK editions, as the North American record companies would drop a couple of album tracks and add a couple singles. That's why I had Magazine's An Alternative Use of Soap on LP for years before getting The Correct Use of Soap on CD.

Another case like Metamatic/the grey album happened around the same time, when North America got something called Stranglers IV instead of The Raven. Half of the tracks from the album, plus a side of odds and sods. Initial copies came with a four song EP that included a couple more Stranglers songs plus one each from Hugh Cornwell's and JJ Burnel's respective solo albums of that time.

Then there are albums with all the right tracks but in a different order, like Vienna. I still think it works better starting with Sleepwalk and not Astradyne...
