Not sure I'd go see them again in whatever guise. Saw them at Wembley in 1989 - apart from Mel Gaynor, it was all very earnest, and just not enough tunes to make it anything more than a 'Well, if nothing else, I can at least say I've seen them. Can I go now? ' experience.

After coming back from the O2 tonight, my advice would be to give SM a miss and see Duran Duran instead. Far more fun than anything SM could or would give you for your money, really.

I've always wanted to see Duran Duran. Excellent band. I can't compare SM and DD though - they both offer such different things. I haven't played DD's last album for a while, but I thought it was a damn fine modern pop record - which is what they're good at doing. I would have probably have seen DD by now if they didn't overcharge for their tickets.

However the best Simple Minds gigs for me were on their 2003 tour, when they played a lot more early material such as Sweat In Bullet, Hunter and the Hunted and Premonition.

Those gigs would take some topping, and were as good as any of the shows by the original line-up that I've heard or seen on video. But in studio terms, the band seem scared to progress and shake off the stadium rock sound. Given that I'm really a fan of their early work, up to and including New Gold Dream, I find it particularly frustrating.
