News on some interesting releases, from Gary Numan's website:
NEW REPLICAS FROM BEGGARS BANQUET (News date: Dec 2) On February 25, 2008 Beggars Banquet will be releasing a 2 CD, 27-track, Replicas Redux 2008 Tour Edition featuring, on CD1, the original Replicas album and B-sides, on CD2, the previously released 'out-takes' such as 'We Have A Technical', 'Only A Downstat' etc plus earlier versions of all the tracks that appeared on the original album. These tracks date from sessions recorded at the end of 1978 and early 1979. Beggars Banquet have also put together a special 3 CD Deluxe edition of Replicas Redux which will be exclusive to fans who buy the album through NuWorld. This third CD is a six track EP of early demos plus alternative versions and mixes, including different recordings of 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' and 'Replicas'. It will be housed in a cardboard wallet and will only be available from the NuWorld shop as part of the limited Deluxe edition 3 CD package.
NEW LIVE ALBUM FROM BEGGARS BANQUET (News date: Dec 2) Also in February 2008 to celebrate Gary's 30th year as a recording artist - Tubeway Army's first single That's Too Bad came out on Beggars Banquet in Feb 1978 - Beggars Banquet are releasing a recording of Gary's last night on the Touring Principle World Tour. The show took place on 31st May, 1980 in Sydney, Australia and will ONLY be available through NuWorld. The full tracklisting is as follows: Intro, Airlane, Me! I Disconnect From You, Praying To The Aliens, M.E., Films, We Are So Fragile, Are 'Friends' Electric?, Conversation, Remind Me To Smile, Replicas, Remember I Was Vapour, Trois Gymnopedies, Cars, I Die; You Die, Bombers and Tracks.

Thanks for the post Alex. I hope February comes around very fast. I really didn't think that there would be anything else that Beggars could unearth to do with Replicas.
great news!

The sydney live cd will only be an officially pressed disc of whats been on the bootleg circuit for years. But the 'Replicas' 2 and 3 disc sets is the main one of these releases.
Come on BB, we know theres more!!

Come on BB, we know theres more!! Re Sydney, that's 100% acurate mate, most of us have as good as they will be selling you so who would buy it??,even for the artwork if it's more than a fiver who will bother?? But YES,the 3 disc set will be most desirable(what mistyfies me is BB have been saying for years that there is absolutley NO out-takes from the Replicas era that havent already been released,so were did this stuff surface from, can we now still belive them that all the Pleasure Principle and Telekon stuff has been released?

I don't have any old Numan bootlegs at all, so the Sydney CD will be most welcome in my collection

Yeah thats it, i played some from the show last night once i heard the news. The sound quality is the best from any numan bootleg you could hear, and better than the 'Dream Corrosion' official double cd. Further more, on the original performance the band played 'Down In The Park', but by the time a bootleg surfaced.....it was missing. This official release will also NOT include the missing track, so it will be pressed from the bootleg, or the same source as the bootleg.

See my post last night at the Numan site. There are other demo sessions from 'Principle' and 'Telekon' era's. Theres also a completed remix version of the entire 'Dance' album, thats way passed any demo stage. Come on BB, we know its out there!! [Edit] 15:12 Post slightly edited due to a slap on the wrist

At this stage its likely to include both versions, the real 'Replicas' sessions outake and the re-issued version. The reason being that even just the two disc version will need most (or all) tracks 'from the vaults' to be added.

He doesn't always do pre-orders on his website. I think they'll go on sale closer to the start of the tour.
He mentions in one of the news updates that a new website with new shop will be going online any time now... so maybe then?
I like the new Replicas rare/mixes sleeve :-)

It's a shame that the Renegade Soundwave mixes are on the disc. I didn't like their mixes when I heard them years ago, but more importantly the mixes have nothing to do with the original Replicas tracks. So why are they on there?
Sorry for the gripe.

Sorry for the gripe. Your not the only one to raise that fact, most fans are unhappy with those two tracks being on the cd but it's not our choice.

It would have been best to keep it to the original sessions. I 'guess' BB thought it would be value for money and make it more collectable. Final decisions go with the majority in the same way that BB opted for 'Engineers' without 'DITP' and 'Metal' even though they were performed that night.

It spoils it for me having the Renegade Soundwave mixes on the disc. I know I have the option of skipping them, which I most certainly will, but it spoils the running order, & the RS mixes don't have that Replicas sound.
It's also annoying that DITP & Metal have been omitted from 'Engineers'. WTF! Why do these record companies give you something with one hand, then take it away with the other? All we want is everything & that is NOT too much to ask for. I'd quite happily pay extra just to have the complete set of Replicas & Engineers without the fannying about.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

As for "Engineers" DITP and Metal(and Engineers itself for that matter) were not on the Original Radio show that this recording comes directly from (or more to the point from the bootleg most of us have)

The only good point about 'Engineeres' missing is that it was not performed at the gig itself, so it could never be on the original broadcast, or subsequent bootleg.

My point was that DITP and Metal were not brodcast by the radio station nor on the boot made from the tapes from the radio station so that leads me to belive that they didnt record those tracks on the night

I was agreeing with you that its not on the live album, but at least its not missing for no reason.

I always thought he never did Engineers live cos they couldn't get the circus drum roll at the beginning right or something ! Actually it's quite a big 'drum' track isn't it? Good cover too BTW.

I quoteth from GN myspace : It came to our attention that HMV.com and Amazon.com are listing the 'Replicas: Mixes & Versions' CD and the 'Engineers' CD - both limited editions
Apparently a mistake was made by a sales person, and both online stores have been asked to remove them
Not sure how soon they will do this (if at all), but they will not receive 'Engineers' and 'Replicas: Mixes and Versions' so don't waist your time and money
Please, do not pre-order these two releases from them, they will only be available from NuWorld As soon as they're in, you'll be informed. Who knows, maybe one day they will sell them, but right now, both CD’s are a NuWorld exclusive!
Online stores are able to sell the upcoming 'Are Friends Electric/Down In The Park' 7" picture disc that comes out on 25th February.
regards Erik

Cheers D! Just wonder why they can't give us an advance release date on these two albums I've never heard the original bootleg that became 'Engineers' - is it really that different set-wise to the 'Living Ornaments '80' album? If there's one complaint about Numan, it's the amount of Live Albums he puts out - how many official live albums are there? There does seem to be a lot of them, and some of them are (IMHO) rubbish (That would be you 'Ghost', and yes 'The Skin Mechanic' - you as well!)

I was really into Berserker and the White Noise live album when they first came out. I also managed to get the brilliant Sharpe and Numan single Change Your Mind. This was really his comeback. Warriors lacked the punch that Berserker had and was very tin-sounding as Numan himself described it. Ordered Cold Warning last night. Great version of Down in the Park on that show. Chris PS Mind you his image on the Berserker album and tour is very reminiscent of: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?what=R&obid=229384 The title track from Wunderbar by Riechmann was played a lot at the Blitz. The album is a synth instrumental album a la JM Jarre and is pure ARP Synthesizer, built on the ARP 2600 (must be the Blue meanie!), the ARP Odyssey and the ARP Sequencer.

At over £17 for the 3cd set from Nuworld (the 3rd exclusive to Nuworld disc has only 4 unreleased tracks with the awefull Renegade Soundwave remixes tagged onto either end)thats nearly a tenner for that disc alone( you can get the 2 cd set from other sites for just over £8) I'm a little bit peaved!!

Think I'll also just get the 2-Disc of Replicas - can't really see any merit in the 3rd disc. Engineers - just don't get it all; You get early renditions of 'Praying To The Aliens', 'Remind Me To Smile', 'Replicas', 'Remember I Was Vapour', 'Trois Gymnopedies' and 'I Die:You Die' but no 'Down In The Park?' I find it hard to believe Numan would play a set without 'Down in the Park'! What's the story with the master tape for this!? Is half of it missing or something?

Good question Beach. Don't really know the answer but I do know it's taken from ABC Sydney Australia's original tape, so perhaps they didn't tape it (?) I'll ask the experts why no 'Park' anyways.

I've had two answers:
1) it was cut from the recording cos the radio show it was only an hour long (idem We Are Glass, Metal)
2) he didnt do it on the night, ..seems improbable ..

He did play DITP and metal, and both were recorded by the radio station. Tis a bit of a mystery, this one.

Well it aint on the boot of the same gig either(dunno if Engineers was actually cut from the master or just one of the many boots,it is superb for a boot) So..I won't be buying Engineers simply because I've had a copy for years(why even bother releasing it now after all this time??) and probably will only buy the 2disc set.

Is it just the 'Machine Music' period or will we have to sit through 'Machine and Soul' again in 10 years!? He's done Telekon, he's doing Replicas - will he do Pleasure Principle? Or will he just go and re-do Wembley '81, say he's finished touring and then come back (again) in 2010 with 'Warriors (redux)'?

He's done Telekon, he's doing Replicas - will he do Pleasure Principle? The 'Principle' shows are almost for sure. Maybe 'Warriors', 'Berserker' and even 'The Fury', but the thought is that after that he dont want to keep going down the 'nostalgia road'. The point hes trying to make is that these shows are for older fans, but the present career i.e. 'Pure' 'Jagged' etc is where things really stand now. The brief thoughts of an accoustic 'Tubeway Army' set, soon went. But i have a 'funny feeling' some TA days will return in some form.

 [Edit]Theres a few wishful rumours that some TA songs may appear as an encore for the 'Principle' shows, as its only 13 songs long otherwise. Whats the chance of it being DITP and AFE instead.

So do I, Maryann. It would be great if Gary would strip the music back to the bare bones, just guitar, bass, drums & a couple of synths, then crank it up & blast it out LOUD!!!!!!! I can imagine 'Steel & You' melting my ears with raw gloriousness.

Okay, the demo tracks on the third cd ( not on this double release) are slightly more different than those on cd two. But again there not too different from the finished album.

Well it arrived today, and having now heard it complete, the verious samples around proved right. Not too different from the original. Great re-issue though. *thumbs up*.

I believe it's from the new Replicas re-issue booklet so must be 1978 when recording said opus.
Looks like he's saying "What happens if I press this one? Does it play Cars?"

Mine's ordered.... I've posted photos of Gary in action from Sheffield on Saturday, on my MySpace and FaceBook pages... ...though I guess you need to be added as a friend to see them. I heard talk at the gig that the next (and possibly final) "old album tour" is likely to be either for Tubeway Army or Dance.

Theres quite a lot of extra pics included. Sound quality is better than not just the original bootleg but also a 'remastered' booty that been around for about four years. As for the track listing, still miss DITP and Metal not being there, but well worth having in the collection.

[/b] I think people may think that because the 'Principle' style lighting has been used now for this 'Replicas' tour. A 'Principle' tour though would now need a totally different design than expected, and so adds to the wait.

Imagine Replicas played with the power of Pure. The arrangements and most of the synths sounded true to the originals, but the power of them all had been gloriously beefed up. It was also nice to see Gary playing keyboards (or at least pressing a note or two!) on some songs. I enjoyed it, but IMHO it wasn't half as good as the 2006 Telekon show. Then again I'm slightly biased because I much prefer Telekon over Replicas. Being the second night of the tour, various arrangement problems were still being ironed out, much to Gary's amusement, and he'll be the first to admit that remembering the lyrics to all these 30 year old tracks is no easy thing - many of which hadn't been played live at all! The Replicas 'part' of the show lasted just over an hour, before they ran out of Replicas songs. They played all the album tracks and b-sides. For an encore, they played Cars, Every Day I Die and Prayer for the Unborn from Pure. The light show was cool, but not as impressive as the Telekon panels. There was no spotlight on Gary so he spent most of the show in silhouette. I Nearly Married A Human and We Have A Technical sounded great. Unfortunately, the Sheffield Corporation, with it's narrow letterbox-like stage and extremely low ceiling was not the best venue for sound, Gary's vocals sounding muffled at times or drowned out. The Numan sound really benefits from a venue with good acoustics. But, with a new Sheffield Academy due to open soon, I hope he returns and plays there as he's better suited to that kind of place (although for me, the best Numan venue is Nottingham Rock City.

Gary has been so inundated with orders for Replicas Redux and Engineers that despite getting extra people in to sort the orders out, he's had to temporarily deactivate the NuWorld shop!
I ordered my copy of Engineers last week, so who knows when it will arrive!!

Thanks again Alex. Yes I can well imagine Replicas live being more 'rocky' à la Pure etc. rather than Telekon-y electronic based. (More of Telekon man myself too.) Nice set list , shame about the venue.

Thanks Alex for your report on the Replicas tour and sharing the photo's. I'm looking forward to seeing him at the O2 Arean on the 15th March. I managed to place my order for the Replicas Redux CD before Nuworld deactivated the online shop only to be warned that it could take up to 30 days for my CD to arrive. I hope the wait is worth it. Regards Peter

I'm sure it will be. I've seen the 2-disc edition in the shops and the packaging looks nice. I'd like to see the 3-disc version.

Yes, theres been lots of favourable comments about those synth lead tracks in particular. No surprise even the bootlegs are sounding good. If there are any.

As no one has mentioned the vinyl re-issues of 'Replicas' and 'The Pleasure Principle' yet I thought I'd mention them - I had a look at them in HMV on Saturday: very professional, more so than the Italian'The Garden'vinyl re-issue a few years back. Nice card used for the sleeve, inner sleeve also reproduced too (not often you see that in vinyl re-issues)and the vinyl is nice and heavy (180gsm...I think). The edition no. is stamped haphazardly on the back. Word of warning on the 'Art-Print' though: a complete waste of time. It's just an A5 size piece of very flimsy paper - not dissimilar to a flyer and is just a scan of the original poster that came with the original copy of Replicas back in '79. The Pleasure Principle 'art-print' is just a badly chopped scan of the 'Asylum' artwork on the back of the original 'Cars' 7". If you feel the need to own these, fair enough - but if you have the originals, I wouldn't bother. http://www.sisterray.co.uk/product_info....41a51fd44dc21b3

[/b]Hi Newvox, No I don't own them, as I said - if you have the originals then you really don't need to bother getting these. A mate of mine used to own the original art for the Metal Rhythm vinyl - no idea how he came by it!
