Yes yes.
Who got the keys to my RS, we're goin' on a road test.
Hit the M4 and head west, forever impressed with the sound of my two-liter.
We cover ground, engine singing like Anita Baker.

The Joni Mitchell listing made me think of this one to add:
Mama Cass from the Mamas and the Papas; ancient I know, but when I hear that California Dreaming song and some of their others on the radio I always remark to myself: "what a voice". The other female vocalist in the group also but not as good as Cass Elliot.

great topic. too many. please allow me to go over 5. sorries. i like being taken sideways toward surrealism w/music and i think female vocals can do that best. when they WANT TO.

without question, edda del’orso is tops. um ... offa the top of my head ...

edda del'orso (the largest vocal range on earth)
m.s. subbulaxmi (the most intense voice anyone has ever heard at any time from anywhere)
ofra haza (yikes/wow)
dagmar kraus (shiver)
sarah b (for obvious reasons)
yma sumac (for obvious reasons)
bebel gilberto (sunshine and feelng good)
asha bhosle (indian religious/indian pop/bollywood and everything else from the sub cont)
lata mageshkara (same as asha)
miss maki (maki nomiya of P5)
pearl e. gates (later known as pearl harbour, of pearl harbour & the explosions)
carmen maki
billy holliday
björk guðmundsdóttir (years and years of hating her voice, years and years of loving her voice -- no in-between w/björk and she invaded my brain for long periods of time)
kate bush
chrissie hynde (perfect voice and it sometimes really bugs me, too)
ute lemper (crazy perfect)
diana ross (i can't get tired of "you keep me hangin' on," "surfer boy," "i'm comin' out" etc. -- surrealism!)
fontella bass ("rescue me" keeps haunting my brain)
astrud gilberto (sunshine in my brain)
edith piaf (surrealism, an image lost in faded film)
marlene dietrich (because 'lili marlene,' in german or english, almost always makes me cry even though i don't want to. "in flash of ash and silent movies," as john foxx would put it, even though i think she's most famous for talkies)
gladys knight (mind invader)
lætitia sadier
sarah cracknell
juliette greco
rose mcdowall
ella fitzgerald
alison statton (of young marble giants)
cossi fanni tutti (of TG, chris & cossi, carter tutti)
aretha franklin
mary hansen
olivia (brasilian singer)
nancy sinatra
lady saw
gudrun gut
jennifer herrema
pj harvey
takako minekawa
joyce (joyce silveira palhano de jesus)
betty bacardi
zita (of rotschild)
shina ringo
akiko yano (takes voice where voice doesn't normally go)
joni mitchell ("hissing of summer lawns" is flawless, a masterpiece, masterwerk)
tori amos (very bushian)
anja garbarek
debbie harry (teenaged lust focus + surrealistic songs and melodies)
nina kinert

... ok, i'm drawing a blank. anyway, for indulging me: danke. there are more and more. wink

I've decided to dust this one down after coming across this on another site Let's hear it for ANN WILSON Lovely voice ; great song but it could be improved by having the three male "guitar heroes " removed and summarily executed by firing squad laugh and replacing them with our John on synth I'd spare her sister NANCY mind !

My most recent discovery is Keren Ann.

Lovely voice. New album 101 out today. I think it's going to be big. It's getting good reviews and unlike her previous albums, seems to be getting good marketing here in the UK. She's proven very popular in France over the last ten years, probably as she writes and sings in French a lot of the time. Nice to see her getting overseas at last.
