I've heard or seen this soundcheck somewhere else or someone has written about it on one of the forums so this one is not new to me for a change.

HA! HA! HA! ..only just saw the Swedish TV thing and it's absoloutely hilarious! A bit sarkey that 'learn more English' comment tho' .. poor chap!
It sort of struck me how 'cocky' our John seemed to be back then but a lot more mellow and gentlemanly now .. sort of had the same impression when I saw an old P Oakey interview recently. Does that happen to all of us with age or is it just a sign of the times?

Yeah, and it didn't even take JF that long to lose his 'edge' - he acted pretty much like he does now in his '80s interviews. That Swedish interview is a real anomaly. I don't think the 'English' comment was intended to sound as hilariously snide as it did, and he did answer that dopey question they asked about Eno very politely (before being extremely rudely talked over halfway through). He obviously felt he was being derided somewhat, and I think in the context of all the unfavourable media attention Ultravox were getting at that point, his sarky reaction is understandable. I bet he'd cringe if he saw the interview now. It was sunk as soon as he got to the Jesus/Hitler comment wink .

i must openly admit that i really liked the downright honesty in full effect of john in that swedish interview ! ;-)

i did *lol* as much as i thought "that's what u ( the interviewers ) get for asking silly questions !" - "ha!ha!ha!" ;-)

well done , john ! :-)

Extremely funny...and badly edited. Just look at John's hands.

Notice the bit @ 00:42: John is making a circular gesture while saying "People who can't think very well..." and when the scene cuts to a back shot his hands are suddenly down again!

IMHO the complete sentence could be something like "People who can't think very well, like you lot (circular gesture), tend to put label on things".

The ending is just surreal – John; fuming and incredulous at the same time, being led away by that woman in red, whilst the ‘band’ play ‘For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow’ – a bit like Sgt. Howie finding himself stuck among the people of Summerisle! Hilarious footage.

Did anyone ever post the Riverside interview on YouTube? I had a search, couldn't find it though.

Curious to see it after so much discussion in this thread!

I'm afraid that I can't find a YouTube link, but below is a 'rough transcript' of the entire interview if that's any use...

*****

Steve Blacknell: So, John Foxx, where have you been for these last two years?

John Foxx: In make-up for the first six months up there... (laughs) No, actually I've been off to Italy, I went to Italy for a bit and then I went to America for a bit and then I came back here for a bit...

SB: Have you been working in these places or have you been holidaying?

JF: Holidaying? Yes, both in fact. I went to have a look around and to have a holiday and to work.

Eddie Maelov: I was just thinking about the album that's coming out, what's it called?

JF: The Golden Section .

Sunshine Patterson: And what does that mean? Oh...

Some drinks arrive!

SB: Stone me! drinks.

JF: Oh, I don't want that one (laughs).

EM: (to John) Don't touch that, it's acid (laughs).

SP: (to John) Cheers... to the album and the tour.

EM: ... oh, at least.

JF: I'll have this one I think (looking at a blue drink) If my lips turn blue...

EM: It takes quite a long time for you to put an album together, why?

JF: I'm dead lazy I think really (laughs)...

SB: You can't say that!

EM: Is it down to the method that you use presumably?

JF: I work intensely,

EM: Over short periods?

JF: ... yeah, for about two days a week and spend the rest of the time in Cannes, you know with my jet-set friends and...

EM: Good.

JF: No, what I do is actually I did another album and scrapped it 'cos I didn't like it very much to be honest.

EM: Now, did you scrap a whole album?

JF: Yeah...

EM: Non of this appears on The Golden Section ?

JF : One or two bits do, but I do that all the time because I record bits all the time and if I don't like them I throw them away.

EM: Yes.

SP: What about the tour John, when do you start?

JF: October the thirteenth I think...

SP: Where, where's your first date?

JF: ... in The Hacienda in Manchester.

EM: Oh, we're going there...

SP: Yeah!

EM: ...in fact I think we'll cross you on tour, 'cos we're playing the...

JF: (to Eddie and Sunshine) You've crossed me many times (laughs).

EM: (laughs).

SP: How do you feel about it then?

JF: Good, actually I think I'm quite excited about it. I mean it's something I want to do 'cos I like it, I like being on stage but I haven't wanted to do it until now because of the nature of the kind of tracks I've been recording. Like, you know, the frozen electronic stuff which I don't like anymore really. I don't want anything to do with it, so...

EM: But have you missed being away from the stage and away from the lights?

JF: Not the lights, I just like people. I just like that feeling that you get at gigs when it works properly and people kind of merge and... it's a funny, it would just sound pretentious talking about it but it doesn't happen in any kind of, in any other way of...

EM: (To Steve) You ask...

SB: One question that I'm bursting to ask...

JF: Alright!

SB: ... it's a bit of an obvious one...

JF: Burst!

SB: ... the Ultravox days, do people actually still ask you about that, are you still identified in any way with Ultravox at all?

JF: Well it looks like I definitely have been doesn't it (laughs)...

SB: I mean 'the public'.

JF: Oh yeah, well I mean it's pretty strong that identification I think isn't it...

SB: Is it a tag you hate?

JF: No not particularly, 'cos it's just a part of the history. I just think it's something that I did.

SP: What's the last time you were on stage?

JF: The last time was about three or possibly four years ago now I think wasn't it...

SP: Where?

JF: Oh, Los Angeles or San Fransisco somewhere like that, I can't remember. One of those places that you kind of go barmy at and then you find yourself in England walking around at four O'Clock in the morning trying to find breakfast.

EM: Are you nervous, do you feel nervous about going back on the road now or do you just feel excited about it, or scared stiff (laughs)?

JF: Eh, Yeah...

EM & SP: All of them!

JF: Everything. No, I think I'll enjoy it actually, I do like it...

EM: I hope you do.

JF: ...'cos we're just rehearsing and it's really exciting now and it's going like a bomb, it's good.

SP: Well, good luck.

JF: Thanks...

SB: We'll be there...

JF: Alright!
