A new single, entitled Never Been Here Before, is set to be released next year by John Foxx and Jori Hulkkonen. laugh

You can have a sneak preview by visiting Jori's myspace site.

The single will be out in January, and the album (which will feature a longer version of Never Been Here Before) will be out in March - both will be released on F Communications.

Further details will follow just as soon as they've been confirmed.

This is exciting news. I thought I heard John say at Leeds he'd just done something new with Jori.

I loved 'Dislocated', so I'll be checking out Never Been Here Before!

Thanks Rob cool

Is that John?! He sounds so different... I guess it's a similar vocal effect to "Camera".

An interesting lyric, almost like a 1930s-ballad, combined with a very cool synth arrangement.

Yeah, sounds like auto tune.

It's a nice track, but I think I prefer Dislocation. Perhaps this one's a grower though.

Wow! I would never have guessed that was John. Doesn't have the same instant appeal as Dislocated. I expect it will grow on me after a few plays smile

Cool video!

I take it John wasn't available, so Jori had to make do with an oversized still! ;-)

Sounding good, but may take a few listens. Like the N12 etc, whenever John works with others, its never so instant for me.

Just had an email from F-Comunications announcing that this single down for release as a 12" single ONLY (???) due to be released on 4th February.

The album will be available only as a digital download from 10th March.

Jori has just finished now a remix for ROBYN "Be MIne" and also for THE PRESETS "This Boy's in love".

Hi Andreas

Is your version of Dislocated the one with the card sleeve? It only came out as a demo on CD. I wonder if Never Been Here Before will be relased in this format.

I understood that Dislocated was released on CD in Europe, but on vinyl in the Uk, with different tracklistings...?

Hi Chris!

Yes it is the card sleeve . I bought this CD on E-bay for a good price in the past. But it looks not like a demo - more as an official release 'cause it is printed on the CD with the tracklist and the card sleeve looks like the 12" vinyl (which I own too). So I think Martin is right about an special European release. But I never found this CD in the shops here and it was the only one on E-bay at the time I looked for it. Seems it is a rare item.
Jori should release the new single in this format too - it is a really nice collectors item.

Track list on the CD are:

Dislocated - Radio Edit
Dislocated - Album Version
Jussi pekka's Pointed on a Map remix
Pajatso - Bonus Track

Cheers, Andreas wink

Jori Hulkkonen told me at Cargo (Metamatic gig 8.10.2007) that "Dislocated" was not released in CD-single format. Every copy of "Dislocated" CD-single is a promo disc.

Promo not demo that's what I meant. My copy is the one with the cardboard sleeve. On the reverse in very small print amongst other text it reads "For your professional and promotional use only".

Well if Jori could release his new single in this format I'm sure that he'll get well promoted.

I's the same card sleeve for my CD. I never read this very small text on the back to the end - but you both are right ; it's a promotional CD.

The style of the sleeve is the same as for the 12" - though they have different track lists.

On the 12" are 4 remixes of Dislocated (but for my opinion not as good as the original).

- A1/ Jussi Pekka's Pointed on a Map remix( same as on the CD single)
- A2/ Definitive French Remix by The Youngsters
- B1/ Huoratron Remix
- B2/ Jori Hulkkonen Re-mix

I agree with Chris - would be great to have the new single as a CD in the same style too.

Cheers, Andreas

Jori gives an interesting interview in the following link: -

http://www.findance.com/english/interviews.php?id=261

To quote:

I’m even seriously considering about releasing my next artist material through F Communicatons in only vinyl and electronic format. CD is the format that is going to disappear eventually.

The interview is from March 2007, so I guess he is referring to the material being released now.

Latest news on this single suggest that it is set for release on 3rd March 2008.

A1 - Never Been here Before
B1 - Sasse Remix

also available as digital download.

I suspect there will be a radio/dj edit?

Looks like a cut & paste of my post above.I cut the prices off..

As for downloads, like many others I'd rather have a cd single with artwork rather than an mp3 with all of the sound quality thrown away.I would be happier if I could get them in a lossless format rather than mp3.

Let's not forget this is OUT NOW and constitutes a John Foxx official release. cool cool

Takes a while to download the four 192kbps tracks, but I'm enjoying them all VERY much on first listen.
Download includes the cover too.

More comments to follow I suspect.

Be aware that the 12" vinyl single contains only TWO tracks, and both are on the download.
The Jori Hulkkonen dub and Sasse dub mixes.
This is available on import from France etc (£6.99), but HMV UK have a release date of NEXT Monday 10th (£4.99)

I guess we'll have to wait for the album to hear the 'original' version of the song

You can bet the CD version will soon appear on e-bay at some suitably high price.

I will be left with the choice of paying well over the odds to get it in the format I want, or paying a very reasonable price to get it in a format (download) that I don't particularly like.

Why doesn't he just relase the blumin' album on CD properly mad

The Radio edit version of this song is available for FREE download as mp3 from the F-Com homepage

http://www.fcom.fr/ez/index.php/en/

Bottom right hand corner box, marked with a gold star.

I have struggled to find ANY reviews of this online, so I have put together one of my own. cool
Not quite the style you might be getting familiar with, but I hope it summarises the single objectively and gives a general idea of what its all about.

More peppermint than petrol
"Never Been Here Before" is the second single by leading Finland DJ Jori Hulkkonen to be written for and feature guest vocals by John Foxx.
Taken from Hulkkonen's forthcoming album Errare Machinale Est, this new single is quite different from the first collaboration, 2005's Dislocated, which could have easily passed for a track written by Foxx himself and lost in the post for twenty five year on its way to Scandinavia for mixing and production.

NBHB is piano-led, dance based techno, soft and deep, with tender vocals from Foxx treated with vocoder and much gentleness, carried along with that spray-can hiss familiar to fans of Crash and Burn and interrupted with exactly the right amount of bleeps and ARP(??) notes. The track (at least the radio edit) is quietly filmic and has enormous potential for both the dancefloor and a tv ad - it will be interesting to hear the full version when the album is released in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, and as per Dislocated, there are four remixes of the song available, featuring some of Northern Europe's most eminent DJs including Sasse (aka Klas Lindbad, the Green Man, Morris Brown, Must! etc) the owner Moodmusic Records, who currently has two residencies in Berlin specialising in luscious house vibes and funky, deep techno; and Jeff Benett, celebrated producer of The Youngsters (who themselves remixed a version of Dislocated) and best known for skill with melodies and minimalism.

Benett's remix of NBHB carries the EP, and is certainly the strongest of the four versions. Hulkkonen's own 'dub' opener is a mellow and hypnotic instrumental, while Sasse's 'dub' which follows is a little more clinical and upbeat, reminsicent of Lee Norris (aka Metamatics, with whom Foxx fans will already be familiar. It is these two tracks that feature on the only available hard copy, a 12" vinyl single. This will disappoint Foxx fans in particular as he is virtually absent from both, and compared with the other two mixes these are furthest removed from his characteristic sound. The echoing, softly delivered chorus drifts in and out of one or the other, but neither is particularly inspiring.

Benett's remix (track 3) involves a radical treatment of the whole vocal track that makes Foxx sound female in a way that works surprisingly well. It's the most adventurous dance-oriented version and the only one that I felt wasn't quite long enough.
Sasse's second attempt is crisp, clean and closest to the radio version, giving the EP tighter and more defined edges than the others. There are those that will argue this goes on rather too long, but for late night/early morning Sunday clubbers this deep, minimalist chill out would be the perfect tonic.

To be honest, I suspect most Foxx fans will buy this out of loyalty and completeness rather than the must-have passion that drives the lust for new material. It is after all incidental to his current projects rather than the harbinger of a change in direction.
There is more peppermint than petrol in NBHB, and it is more Jori and less John than Dislocated. In that regard it is quite a departure from what we are used to and perhaps is more significant for its origin and for what it represents than for what it ultimately sounds like.
There is a lot of wonderful electronic music and some of the best DJs in Europe coming out of Finland at the moment, and Hulkkonen is at the forefront. If he can bring a new audience to the work of John Foxx then we will be all the better for it. Works both ways of course - John doesn't do this kind of work with anyone else and has a mutual admiration for and belief in Jori Hulkkonen. And it does underline once again how much respect there is underground for Foxx and how vast his influence truly is.
