The sequencer for the Prophet 5 came as an accessory. The Sequential Circuits Pro-One was the one that had both sequencer and arpeggiator but not the Prophet 5. However, the Pro-One was a monosynth mainly used as a bass and lead synth.

Just going through The Service I and II fanzine magazines I noticed a few answers from John to some questions from some fans:

"Here's a list of the synths used on The Garden album:

ARP (the ARP Odyssey - could have been a MKII)
Lynn Drums (the LinnDrum)
Roland Jupiter 8
Movement Systems Drum Computer (the Movement Drum System 1)
Elka Strings (the Elka Rhapsody 610)
Roland Strings/Vocoder (Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus)
Roland Guitar Synthesizer (could have been a Roland GR-500)
Sequential Circuits Prophet 5
ARP Sequencer"

As one can see the list also includes drum machines etc

"What kind of synthesizers does John use?

Here is the latest list:
Sequential Circuits Prophet 5
Sequential Circuits Prophet T8
MOOG Minimoog Model D
MOOG Polymoog Keyboard
ARP Odyssey (could have been a MKII)
Roland Juno 60
Roland Jupiter 8
Fairlight CMI Series II
Linn Drum 2 (the LinnDrum)
PPG Wave 2.2
Simmons Electronic Drums (SDS-V or SDS-5)
Oberheim OBX
Roland Micro Composer MC4
Roland Micro Composer MC8
Roland Guitar Synth (could have been a Roland GR-500)
Korg Guitar Synth (could have been a Korg X-911)
E-mu Emulator 1
Yamaha CS 80"

Quite an impressive collection of synths! laugh

I wonder if John still has these.

Oh yes! Temptation was far too great  My birthday is in March so I've purchased a Pro-One, hope it arrives safely from the States. I'm going to have to go again through all the hassles of a customs duty email + fee. The Jupiter-4 was far more expensive and I s***t my pants when I had to pay customs duty!!

It'll be my second bass synth with the luxury of one of best sequencers ever created. Don't worry I won't go disco! eek

Crikey! I'm turning into Vince Clarke.... shocked

It's good to see John (Wesley) Barker at the Forum. Hi John wink

I've always been intrigued by the choice of synths used by John on Metamatic. People like talking about the synthesis, the bass lines and the electronic percussion making the album. However, John did have a predilection for string machines, which gave a filmic finish to his synthesis.

John, on Metamatic what were John's choices in polyphonics and moreover strings? I have a shortlist here:

Elka Rhapsody 610 (plus Roland Space Echo 501)?

Polymoog Keyboard (the one with Vox Humana preset possibly used on Underpass and No-one driving)

Polymoog Synthesizer (the one without the Vox Humana preset and less presets than the Keyboard version)

Yamaha CS-80

Farfisa Syntorchestra

Farfisa Soundmaker

Sequential Circuits Prophet 5

Finally, which machine gifted us with those gorgeous strings on the outro of Touch and Go, and Metamatic, of course ?

You know.... laugh

That's a rather nice history you have there. I couldn't part away from my synths. These have been bought recently, second hand of course, to fulfill one of my lifetime ambitions - to have fun with synths smile

My synths and gadgets are:

Roland Jupiter-4
Roland Juno-60
Roland SH-09
miniKorg 700S
Korg M500 Micro-Preset SP
Casio VL-Tone VL-1

The compact green Hohner Soprano Melodica

A synth I would like to own is the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Rev 2 but it's bloody expensive, even today! It's pretty good on strings and its sequencers are landmark.

It'll be great to find out what John's collection of synths are and were. laugh

BTW What's the WASP like? Did you know that it was Nick Rhodes first keyboard. Any landmark sounds out of it?

Chris C wink [/b]

John's gear during the Metamatic sessions:

ARP Odyssey
ARP Sequencer
Roland CR-78
Elka Rhapsody 610 + MXR Flanger

All is revealed here laugh :
http://jonathan.miller4.users.btopenworld.com/Featurespages/GarethJonesKEYBOARDS/featuretext.html

Mind you other instruments were used ie a Hohner Clavinet on Metal Beat and a Hammnod B 3 on Tidal Wave .

Although I don't own an Elka Rhapsody 610 I own a Yamaha SS-30 so I'll be testing that through an MXR Flanger which I own too. I just need to get a UK/EU plug as the flanger is US

Interesting to note that I recently tried to purchase an ARP Odyssey Mk 3 and the matching sequencer but the financing never happened. shocked These days banks are reluctant to give out loans for music equipment. I should have mentioned it was for buying a football player! mad
