Thanks everyone.

But - as someone who has no idea about this side of things, how does it work?

You download the stems/tracks - how?
Do you need a soundcloud account?
Remix them into your own track...
and upload the result. To where?

Call me naive, but hey - we all have to start somewhen

And one more question...

Rob/Steve - is the 'Medicine Edit' of Shatterproof different to the version on the forthcoming album

The ability to download all of the 'stems' is on the Soundcloud page - the 'down-arrows' adjacent to each 'stem' - and you don't need a Soundcloud account to participate. laugh

There are some specific details for how to upload 'finished' mixes - but I don't have them to hand at the moment. I'll post 'em just as soon as I can. wink

The Medicine Edit of Shatterproof is different to the album version. laugh

Hi Martin,

As a start, the best thing would be to buy Computer Music magazine; every issue comes with a free CD that contains an entire studio worth of free software. Just add to your computer and spend a few hours twiddling knobs and making funny noises for the sheer pleasure of it. you can read manuals etc later.

There's also a freeware application called Audacity that may be useful.

I've had a bit of fun playing with the tracks in Adobe Premiere Elements (5 audio tracka available). Now I realise my limitations as a producer!

I've wrecked the original several times over, but hey, it's fun!

I've used the very primitive "Wave Pad" in the past .. but it's like riding around on an old pushbike, while all your mates have Choppers (
which has its merits nonetheless)

I used to be set up to do this kind of thing.
(I did a remix of "Croydon Library" by Fudgedubnofunk, and had a stab at something or other by Curve once as well..)
I'd have loved to have had a go at the Shatterproof remix.

Audacity is good for manipulating multitracks, and it's free.. but you'd need something to create original bits as well. I used to use FL Studio. And some tracker program or other as well. (MPTRACK?))

The "challenge" is synching up the "given" bits with your own bits.. oo-err missus! wink

Great competition, all interesting treatments and of the six tracks presently, there's three entrants mixes I like best: Mateybloke (Brian) with Shattered Dreams, Angel! with Shattered Angel, and DaveWebber with My Synth
