To really enjoy Cross fade you have to hear it through some headphones or just turn up the volume really loud!

The lyrics are really good too!
Where are you, you're waving, the windows were ablaze We're driving and we're drowning and we're drifting in a daze We're smoking, we're talking, we re-invent the view And we're occupying places just as they get removed
Oh, take a cross fade, cross fade Oh, take a cross fade, cross fade
Oh, take a cross fade, cross fade Oh, take a cross fade, cross fade
The journey was crazy, I'm trying to close my eyes We're bypassing some places as they're editing the time Wake up, you're kneeling, some young man's just gone down There's a flicker and a flutter and the film is running out
Oh, take a cross fade, cross fade Oh, take a cross fade, cross fade, cross fade, cross fade
Pictures into structures and structures into motion Cross over into action, over airways, over ocean
Cross fade, cross fade, cross fade, cross fade...

I dont think it would represent any further albums direction now, due to the fact that its a rhythm based song. On 'SOR' there are two main ones, 'Quiet Men', and 'Dislocation'. The majority of 'SOR' was quite different, chances are any further album would have been too.

Not sure I rate this track all that highly actually. It's a good B-side...
Written by Foxx OK - but do the rest of the band even play on it? I suspect so of course, but its far from obvious...?

It does sound like b-side material. Having said that, by Ultravox standards, a b-side is still a fine thing. Yes they played on 'Cross Fade', but for me it always sounded like a demo instead of the final version.

At the time of SOR release it was another step away from an instrument-band sound towards Metamatic (although I did not know that then of course). For me it was very exciting and thats why I love it.
Also, some of Foxx's best work has been on B-sides. This City is another classic!
