Based on the clip and excerpt I wouldn't recommend too many drinks beforehand! It's not going to be an adrenalinised synth-banging, laser-light-bouncing concert experience, after all. wink

The tone and word choice of the writing in The Quiet Man attempt to convey a mood of antiquated detachment, weariness, and resignation. I think Martin made an excellent point about why the choice of a London accent is appropriate, which I hadn't considered before. Even so, the particular narrator's voice in the excerpt sounds rather flat and affectless to me, and while that may be authentic in terms of the nature of the stories, to me there is a difference between communicating a sense of detachment, weariness, and resignation and, well, sounding detached, weary, and resigned. People who sound bored tend to bore me . . . and the tasteful mellowness of the visuals and piano background might not exactly keep me on the edge of my seat at the end of a long work week, after dinner and possibly alcohol – I would be terrified that I might nod off! Something like this might hold my interest on a Sunday afternoon, perhaps, but I puzzle over the 9 PM start time on a Friday night.

Of course, this might just be sour grapes since I can't be there myself . . . wink

I hope nobody is bored, and I hope you all have a great time. I look forward to the reviews afterward, and especially the information gleaned from the Q&A.

Read it with great interest. Wish I was tonight in Leeds. The Quiet Man is John's most important work, it is central to all his creations.

Should The Quiet Man be eventually released on an audio disc I would hope for John to add two epic instrumentals, one at the beginning and another at the end with the prose in the middle and of course filling up most of the disc. Mind you it make take more than one disc!

Chris wink

I've just found this 'blank' link over at The Guardian...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/movie/127083/john.foxx

!? Why would they put such a link up? Do they know something we don't? Might be worth keeping an eye on.

NICE ONE GARRY - THANKS

I'm actually wildly ambitious, but reconciled to the fact that my ambitions don't fit with many people's expectations.

Once in a While... cool

Cheers Martin,

It's a great interview - some more colour from his past and ideas for the future - and some wonderfully quotable nuggets throughout;

Do you accept the criticism of the cover art?[The Golden Section]

Oh yes. But I still maintain that Brian Griffin is one of the best photographers in the world. He's a true artist. I just got in the way of his lense, is all.
