Oh, Martin, for shame! There can NEVER be too much Metamatic! wink

By the way, I did some comparison shopping (pre-shopping?) and discovered that despite the fact that "The album will be widely available although John has signed 50 copies which will be available for pre-order soon on a first come first serve basis through his official shop at Townsend Records," it is not listed on Townsend yet . . . but there IS a listing for a preorder of a double CD entitled "Glimmer" by some bloke by the name of johnny foxx. I thought Dennis Leigh was looking youthful and spry in recent photos, but when did he take to calling himself "Johnny"?! laugh

New John Foxx Best Of

Glimmer: The Best of John Foxx is due for release through Demon/Edsel on September 22, 2008.

The album features John's most famous singles ranging from Underpass and Burning Car through to Endlessly and Europe After The Rain, plus classic album tracks (The Garden, He's A Liquid) and his heavily electronic re-interpretations with Louis Gordon of early Ultravox classics such as My Sex and Hiroshima Mon Amour.

There's also a selection of material from two of Foxx/Gordon's most under-rated albums Shifting City (1997) and The Pleasures Of Electricity (2001), as well as a sample of his ambient material with Harold Budd and the ongoing Cathedral Oceans project, all of which is due for re-release through Edsel in 2009 and 2010. Cities of Light 5 is a new mix which will also be featured on the forthcoming edition of The Pleasures of Electricity.

In addition to Carcrash Flashback from 2006's Sideways and some recent collaborations with Jori Hulkkonen and Metamatics, the new Dub Terror/Karborn mix of Burning Car completes the album, along with the previously unreleased No One Driving (early version) and Plaza (extended).

The album will be widely available although John has signed 50 copies which will be available for pre-order soon on a first come first serve basis through his official shop at Townsend Records - www.townsend-records.co.uk

The tracklisting is growing on me, but I was hoping to see even more of John and Louis' work included. According to that American website, John chose the tracks himself.

I would say this is more of a 'best of' and certainly not a 'greatest hits' or 'singles collection', hence the absence of tracks from IMW - and let's face it, that's not really John at his 'best'.

And only one track from three Cathedral Oceans albums - and the same short one that was on Modern Art. Maybe it's John's favourite. I guess it's difficult to represent such a vast portfolio of work on just 2 CDs.

Personally I wouldn't have included Free Robot - there are so many original tracks from the neglected albums such as C&B or From Trash that ought to have been incuded. Same for the early versions and extended Plaza etc - they're a bit out of place there and it's pushed other albums tracks that could have been included out of the way.

It would have also been nice to have seen "Running in Traffic" included, as it really is one of John's most enjoyable recent tracks - at least in my opinion, but I doubt it's not just me who thinks that.

Either way, this two disc compilation does visit almost every point in John's solo career (quite an achievement), and for anybody unfamiliar with is music, it's going to be an amazing starting point.

All I can say is that I'm totally pleased with it .. I'm glad about the Metamatic / electronica bias ..I'm glad about 030 .. I'm glad about the rarer stuff towards the end...
Would've liked to have seen This City, but hey .. next time maybe.
BTW it says the Ultravox! stuff is recorded with L. gordon . .are they the 'live' versions then?

They'll be the Exotour and LFAR versions.

John still rates This City as one of his best songs (and I wholeheartedly agree) so it's a bit sad that it isn't included. But at least there isn't so much Metamatic that people won't need to buy the actual album!

And what, no "Shifting City?"... mind you, if I were to include only one track from that album then it would definitely have been "Through my Sleeping" - beautiful track. Great to see it there.

I wonder how "forthcoming" the forthcoming edition of TPOE is. No mention of SC...

Is there a reissue of Crash and Burn planned too? It's certainly under-represented on the CD, given that it was one of John and Louis most acclaimed albums.

It's definitely still forthcoming, but our priorities are currently with the reissued versions of The Garden, The Golden Section and In Mysterious Ways, as well as Glimmer.
