Doesn't he say somewhere something along the lines of being about the same age as David Lynch, who I think turned 60 last year...

John did not write "Jane" as part of The Bed project.
He explains this during the interview.

I've only played the CD once, but I think I remember that he mentions the bed project, but it's only briefly mentioned.

I think it's faily obvious that the musical pieces are not part of that. Why include them on a CD about Metamatic?! It's also obvious that the music snippets are from the 79/80 sessions, as stated in the sleevenotes.

And I think, as I said earlier, they would mention it in the sleevenotes if any of the music was from the bed soundtrack. The notes, brief though they may be, seem to be well researched.

Thanks for the answer Cris C wink
I hope to have this album very soon. It is great age of John Foxx. I saw some videos from this reissue Metamatic 2007 Tour (funny Gary Numan made the same with his Telekon album) and are very great, but some songs are very wierd to compare with the original version.

No coincidence there - Steve Malins manages both Gary and John. The interview CDs are his idea - and what a great idea too smile

OK I'm back from listening to The Bed Soundtrack and Metal Beat.

On Metal Beat John mentions that he gave away a tape of noises to a Soho film company to be used for one of their films etc. It leaked and lucky enough for me I managed to get a decent copy of it (well, as part of a John Foxx rarities compilation from a Shadow Man!). I never thought it sounded so good. Here it is, The Bed Soundtrack .

He's a Liquid (instrumental) 2:04
Piano Piece 2:30
Drums 1 0.38
Drums 2 0:40
Echo Piece 2:53
Jamie's Theme 1:06
Bed Flight 2:00
Touch & Go (strings) 1:30
Bed Cellar 4:37

Now Metal Beat, only features 2 of the above in an abridged form. Jane, as Birdsong points out, is a different recording of the track on The Bed.

To be continued...

I suspect (it seems pretty obvious) that the track was never called 'Jamie's Theme' but was always Jane's and was simply copied down incorrectly all those years ago

Back to Metal Beat . It's difficult to identify which came first, Jane or Jamie's Theme . I suspect Jamie's Theme, as it's a longer version. John's memory is not as hot as it used to be eg the interview part on Fusion/Fission. I'm sure he remixed Jamie's Theme, as Jane was specifically recorded for the New York DJ.

The other "Bed" track that appears on Metal Beat is Bed Cellar. It's simply an abridged version. The version on Metal Beat fades just before the 'Heartbeat-like' sounds that appear on the full version.

There's another track, which I've called Experiment 1 - Drums 3. It's very similar to Drums 2 but still a different drum pattern.

So at the end there's only 2 from "Bed" and perhaps 1, as Jane is a different recording to Jamie's Theme!

So the tracks on Metal Beat are:

CD1

Experiment 1 - Drums 3 1:42
Experiment 2 2:14
Touch and Go (Demo - excerpt) 2:05
No-one Driving(Demo - excerpt) 1:54
Experiment 3 1:05

CD2

Bed Cellar (excerpt) 2:34
Jane 0:44
Instrumental 1 0:38
Plaza (Extended - excerpt) 2:46
Instrumental 2 0:57
Like a Miracle (Demo - excerpt) 2:00

The titles "Experiment" and "Instrumental" are adapted from the liner notes on Metal Beat, which incidentally are not very specific.

I'm very pleased with Metal Beat as a whole. It's more than what I ever dreamed of. laugh

One thing, as long as John or a relative or even a die hard fan (eg the Nation 12 one)has the tapes of these experiments, instrumentals and film music there's always a possibility that all of this will be released one day. I'm not joking. It would be like a Cabaret Voltaire re the Attic Tapes, and in John's case a limited edition. I would even pay £100 for a gold disc version of all this. Aren't we all crazy about John's music!?! eek
