It's not a particularly new/nu theory, but I don't think it applies to this song, which is more about the emergence of Foxx from his "Meta(matic) morphosis" with a solo career.

IMHO, the oh-so subtle Numan reference is more appropriate to the ''Miles Away' lyric:

There's a new man at the edge of me…

which, perhaps, hints at the effective way that Numan's 'pop star' status deflected media attention from John.

Pedantic, me? Surely not :p

The Miles Away one is more obvious, but I'm not even sure if it was really the case - more likely something invented by the media.

John and Gary have always got on well it seems, and been seen at each other's gigs in the past.

I almost had the chance to interview Gary last month, but personal problems (with his wife's pregnancy) got in the way which obviously caused him to cancel all interview commitments at that time.

It would have been nice to have had his contribution to my site - the main theme of my iterview would have been his thoughts on Systems of Romance, now and then.

..that would sort of figure, as Miles Away has a totally 'Numan' sound to me....although I'd though that the lyric had more to do with the fact he was breaking away a little from the totally electronic mode...

Anyway I don't reckon that during Metamatic (ie. 1980) era John was more than 20 - 22 ...

I'm glad my initial enquiry sparked off a decent discussion here ; to tell the truth when I met him last month he seemed much "older" than I thought, and I met a guy who said John was born 1958..which didn't really figure at all if you get my meaning!

I would have thought in 1980 he was more like 25.

But I think you can tell just by looking at him he's early to mid-fifties. When I saw John last year I thought he looked much older than when I first met him in 2003 – but it could just be the haircut that makes all the difference.

If he formed Tiger Lilly in 1974 he must have at least been about 20 years old - though that is a wild guess.

Not that it really matters how old he is - it's just one of those mysterious things we always wanted to know!!

That's a good point. Bear in mind that the whole Metamatic period is characterised by the 'cut-up' style of writing. Few of John's lyrics from that period are 'about' anything in particular, more a collection of images and observations from what may appear to be completely random sources.
Miles Away uses the colloquially English term meaning 'absence of mind' and seemng elsewhere. Being someone almost there, even

As well as what you said. wink

I'm rambling. Discussion of lyrics belongs in a different thread.
Beggin your pardon...
