I'm guessing my favourite bit in the book won't be in the movie (Tom Baker couldn't really pass for his younger self now), but it's great hearing one of my favourite Ultravox songs used in a movie trailer.

Until following the link to the film site I knew nothing about the book on which it is based. The book seems like something I would really have enjoyed, so how did I manage to miss it?

Oh, yeah, I forgot — I live in the States.

I don't think the book ever came out here. I just looked on Amazon.com and the only copy available is used. A mass market paperback is set for release here in June to coincide with/capitalize on the film's release.

Canada gets a lot more British books than the US apparently does. I know I've cheered up a few Americans who didn't want to spend a fortune on Amazon.co.uk shipping costs by pointing out British books were often available from Amazon.ca, with much less expensive shipping. (It's happened with Americans who like Iain (M.) Banks and Richard Morgan, among others.)

is this the correct Awaydays thread??

Anyway, thus Mr Andy McCluskey, who attended the premier, on the OMD forum:

Awaydays was a lot better than I was expecting given the poor reviews that I have seen. OK, some acting could be a bit better and the screenplay could have been a bit tighter.. but for the budget it is very strong. It was engaging and there was an empathy for several of the main characters. A a few hilarious moments.. usually involving sex!

I would recommend it (if you can stand lots of swearing and a few stanley knife incidents) if only to se The Rascals being The Bunnymen!!!!

Some good performances and interesting moments in music clubs. The soundtrack is fantastic!

Lots of Joy Division!

I should've said that Andy McCluskey was at the premiere as well. I managed to speak with him (albeit briefly) before the film started as we were seated close to each other - so much to say, so little time. I've always been a fan of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (especially their first four albums) and so it was a complete pleasure to be able to say hello... laugh
